Literally anything to avoid having to make changes even if its for the better.

Stuff story today about a whole lot of fossil cars running their batteries flat waiting for Covid tests.

The waiting sucks yes but what happened to the arguments EVs would go flat in heavy traffic queues??

So their batteries went flat because they didnt fire up the engine? Thats more a case of being stupid than an issue with the fuel that runs the car.

Yes, so now you'll have lots of cars idling producing pollution etc instead. neither is an argument for fossil cars..

No one said it was. Cars don't need to sit idling either. Batteries don't go flat that quick without some help.

Probably they left their lights on along with other higher drain items like demister fans.

A flat ICE battery from sitting unused made me wonder about EVs and 12v batteries. I see that this year’s Model S and X is moving to a Lithium Ion 12V battery. My hybrid has a deep cycle Lead Acid 12V to close the high voltage relays for the traction battery and run the ancillaries. So I guess an EV is similar? The downside is deep cycle batteries don’t tend to support cranking loads so can’t be used to jump start an ICE. Luckily we had another ICE to revive the dead one. I meant to buy a trickle charger and emergency starter pack after the last lockdown. Got fooled by the “Never having Level 4 again” crowd I guess…….

If that’s the way you feel, I suggest you stick to fanboy sites.

Plenty of EVs have issues with 12v batteries.  They age and fail etc, and the cars 12v system powers the security, start, electronics etc.

They shouldn't fail in this situation as the car will power things from the HV via an inverter.

Some will have issues if they sit for a long time because the 12v system still draws power (phantom drain,wifi/lte, tesla sentry mode etc) and dont always charge the 12v from the HV as this is usually isolated whilst not driving.

Best to start the car once a week or something but this depends on the specific vehicle.

James May had an issue where he had his model S plugged in charging and after some weeks the 12v went flat causing trouble. Because once fully charged the car didnt top up the 12v for some reason.

How long had it been sitting for? I assume longer than we've been in lockdown. Time for a battery tender?

Not sure which is best, good jumper leads or emergency start pack. How long will that starter pack keep it's charge, what's the chance it's flat when you need it or do you need to take it and charge it regularly vs Jumper leads not so convenient (need another battery) but always work and don't need regular checks.

How do you get on if your deep cycle goes flat? Jumper off any 12v battery or need to trickle charge first?

I jump-started our Pajero from our Leaf, but the Leaf was powered on - i.e. "engine running" at the time. But I would never do a jump start without the donor engine running anyway.

There is this video from James May a little while ago about the 12v battery is his Tesla Model S going flat, and the faffing about trying to get to it.

Fossil Fuel Burner sitting in a queue with the engine off, because the battery could go flat you keep everything off so you don't drain the battery.  Every now & then you start the car and move forward a few metres and turn the car off.  But starting the car is a huge load on the battery and if you turn the car off too quickly then there isn't enough time to recover the power that was lost.  In a very long queue waiting for hours you might deplete the 12V battery from all those starts.

EVs use the battery too, but there isn't the huge surge of current to start up an ICE engine.  You can turn the car on a move forward a few metres, with very little lost from the 12V battery.  You can also leave the car turned on and put it in park, maybe for 5 minutes every couple of hours - just to give the 12V time to charge up.  I think the EV would do better in a long queue for Covid testing than an FFB car.

Continuing the discussion, the Nissan Leaf user manual states it cannot be used to jump another vehicle.

The 12 volt battery doesn't have the power to turn an engine over, just run the accessories
