At least batteries can be recycled for their mineral content. Fossil fuels not so much.

Nature recycles fossil fuels

Battery recycling: 10-15 years

Fossil fuel recycling: 150 million years

So I guess at least on the plus side fossil fuel recycling is Someone Else's Problem.

Except for the misguided and dreamers, most people I know are self regulating their unnecessary trips. Reading what’s happening in the Middle East minute by minute you can understand fuel shortage isn’t an issue that’s going away fast and it’s beyond me why government are silent about conserving and daily making it sound as if there’s isn’t a problem and it’s all sweet as.

Are you suggesting they pull the “podium of truth” out of the cupboard and start midday briefings?

LOL no. Just to inform the misguided and uninformed that a dozen ships aren’t on their way from Singapore to save us, as one person with the IQ of today’s temperature was overheard telling another.

Jeez some people are low.

Someone siphoned the diesel out of the van used for picking up students at my wife's workplace - Whangarei's special needs school.

Fun fact, solar irradiance increases naturally about 10% per billion years (the sun using progressively more fuel). If we double CO2 (which we are on track to do this century), the additional heat retained will be equivalent to around a 2% increase in natural solar irradiance. We're speed-running what shouldn't be a problem for a couple of hundred million years...

I watched a disturbing piece from Sky News Australia last night concerning fuel supply in rural and regional areas. The big players (BP, Shell etc) do not service those locations so the distribution role for those areas is fulfilled by regional independent players, who buy the product from those big multi-nationals.

What's happening is because the price of fuel had gone up so much, those independent operators can't afford the upfront cost to buy a tanker truck full of fuel, and the big players are refusing to extend a line of credit to them. It seems like an easy way to crush the little guys...

The net result is that fuel is already not getting through to those regional and rural areas of Australia, so farmers are starting to run dry. For the average Australian, this means the very real possibility that farm produce (milk, meat, fruit & veges, grains etc) could soon stop being replenished on supermarket shelves, and new season planting could grind to a halt.

I'm not sure if we have a similar distribution setup here in NZ - on the surface it seems like no (there seems to be a Z, BP or Mobil in most small towns here) but it's still a concern nonetheless. I'm not sure who McKeown, NPD etc source their fuel from or what their terms are.

[EDIT: on a side note, I saw the price of diesel vs 91 petrol at Z in Christchurch has almost reached parity - yesterday it was $3.39 vs 3.42...]

I saw some heavy equipment parked near a rural road, for a large farm.

Unless the tank is already drained, I'd say they are asking for trouble.

Public transport is not an option for everyone. It's also not reliable in many parts of the country. As an example, AT has multiple rail closures in coming weeks. The rail replacement buses are slower, since the route has to follow roads/traffic, and usually totally inadequate (one bus replacing 3 to 6 carriages?!).

Businesses (especially large businesses) could be doing more by encouraging staff to work from home where possible. The opposite still seems to be happening.

Very few people in positions to make changes that could actually make a difference to non-essential fuel use seem to be doing anything about curbing it.

This is on top of the of dodgy stockpiling of fuel.

We need to do better.

There was a piece on RNZ yesterday where the reporter went visiting a bunch of rural towns to ask people if they had any option except driving. With the exception of Greytown where she talked with someone driving a 1946 Chevrolet (definitely a daily driver!) all of the places she went had DC fast chargers in the town (for the farmers who don't have space in their shed to charge their cars).

So, yes, I get that heavy farm equipment is difficult to electrify at the moment (though not impossible - there are electric tractors on the market) but there is still an element of self-own here. At the very least I would have liked to have seen her have some serious conversations with them about what is really holding them back from at least having an EV town car - and why isn't there any government assistance to help them electrify wherever possible.

Thats awful and it’s often the most needy that get hit. I suspect there will be more of this type of theft as the situation worsens and we will need to up our security ideas as well as economising.

Yeah, the next step after stealing fuel will be vandalising EVs.

Being rurally located, on a farm, public transport is simply not an option for me.

I have already taken steps to try reduce our fuel usage on farm.  I now use my bicycle (push bike) instead of the two wheeler motorbike for shifting stock in during the day.  Added bonus is I am getting fitter!

It isnt much, but any saving of fuel is a win, as it saves it for the other machinery that will need it more.

As for diesel, that is more of a worry, as we have tractors/digger that needs it.  So I am now planning the use of those machines a lot more efficently.

Locks have been installed for all the fuel storage on farm, and security cameras installed.

We are only small, but this is going to have a bit of a flow on effect for prices across the board - I do feel though that supermarkets could absorb some of the costs, rather than passing onto their shoppers, but that is a dream in reality!

The supermarkets will pressure their suppliers to absorb the costs themselves. "If you add a fuel surcharge we'll increase the DC fee."

Expect more suppliers and manufacturers to go out of business during this crisis.
