ilovemusic:
DravidDavid: I would not have thought oxygen deprivation would have been an issue at all.  Would have thought there was enough oxygen exchange in the car to stay in there safely for a whole lot more than 13 hours.

agreed.
cars do not become not hermetically sealed when the doors are closed.

no they dont, but fans draw air in and there are one way vents to let air/pressure out. there is no natural flow of ventilation through the car so it would be quiet easy for CO2 to build up

mrphil: how did they lock them self in to start with?

Keyless entry cars will re-lock if the fob is not in the car.

so, you can never leave the car unlock without having the fob inside?

There is a button near the handle, my guess is it does not have illumination on it that its pretty easy to miss in the darkness .

I have the exact same car as that elderly couple...and was amazed that for 13 hours they could not find the latch to unlock the door, its in the same place as most other cars out there. If he went as far as getting the jack out of the back of the car to try and smash the windows, you'd think he would have tried every nook and cranny on the door to try and unlock it!

They'll be worn out after all that drama, but they'll be able to have a nice snooze on their journey by switching on the Cruise Control.
