Just the minor fact that they are made of tin foil and crumple on impact with things like bees!

My wife killed her starlet at very low speed, full frontal impact was enough to fold the front, jam the doors but not hard enough to break the headlights ... they seemed the toughest bit of the car.

But yes, quite quick .....

I do love starlets, but much like Levins and Trueno's, they are getting really long in the tooth now. Most examples have traveled a significant portion of the distance from here to the moon.

I wouldn't be afraid of high k (150+) Hondas. They are built to be thrashed and have a diet of oil. I've had several over 200k and as long as you did the regular maintenance they would handle track days and traffic no problem. And they are pretty simple to fix it required.

Edit. That's over 200,000 kilometres, not per hour. Very few crack the double tonne and no imports will unless you have an aftermarket computer.

Suzuki SJ413 (or Samurai if you can find one).

You will get a nice one for around 4-5k and then spend around $1000 for some good mud tyres (mudstar's are great).

The most fun you will have in a vehicle is to be had off road. Don't worry about speed on the road.

Not really keen on a big car like a 3 series with a 1.8 as I may as well keep the Torneo. Still I can see the appeal from the one posted before, looks good even in yellow.

Got to admit, the Torneo is growing on me though. It is not fast, but does OK. It doesn't feel that big and steers and handles well. Now that I have got rid of the drone cannon exhaust, stupid loud intake and extractors that make a hole in the power curve, probably due to the O2 sensor being in the wrong place, it is actually quite nice. Will see what happens on Trademe. If it doesn't sell, I think I may just end up keeping it.

If you want something with balls that puts you in the back of your seat, then a gen3 red top MR2 fits really well. I did see your first comment regarding it being hard to fix, but not sure in what way. I've never had to repair one. I have driven the gen1 non turbo and the gen3 turbo though. They are like night and day! The gen1 non-turbo is quick'ish, but I look back at the experience in a dull light having driven the gen3 turbo.

There have been a few tidy gen3 MR2 hard tops on TradeMe in the last few months. Keep an eye out I guess. I am looking for a fixer-upper myself. There are a few floating around, but really want a T-top, so I'm going to see if I can wait until winter, LOL.

Mostly in the way that you would expect from a mid mounted engine with a front mounted radiator. If you need to do anything more than changing spark plugs, oil and air filter it becomes a drop the engine out exercise which means $$$ for mechanics fees. It is not bad and I found it easier to work on than some other cars which are conventionally set up, but it just makes everything that little bit more complex. E.G. changing cam belt $300-400 in a regular car, $1500 in an MR2. Also harder to bleed cooling system etc. Just my experience. They are good cars and I love them dearly, just compared to something simple like am MX5 they are hard to work on.

Cam belt and clutch can both be done without taking the engine out on an SW20 MR2.

When the MK 3 Escort had reached what we call Engineering Prototype stage, which is pretty much the vehicle that will be sold to the public, we had the big boss — Henry Ford Jr — come over from the States to check it out. Apparently he was happy with everything, but after a good look round, he leaned on the front wing, and dented it! So there was a big fuss and we had to up the metal thickness for final production.

This would probably have been in 1979 — the MK3 was released in 1980 — and HF2 died three years later. He wasn't one of those American fatties either, so I guess we'd taken weight saving just a touch too far.
