question, NZ $ is nearly on par with the aus $ yet aussie fuel is 40cents cheaper , did notice oil companies are using a new tact blaming higher refining costs

The exchange rate difference is 5%, Aussie GST is 5% less and the Aussie excise tax is significantly less for a start.

The NZ fuel market has been completely and utterly screwed by BP's SmartFuel and supermarket discounts. Such discounting is now illegal in Australia and discounts are limited to a maximum of 4c per litre due to the fuel market being skewed with the heavy discounting which leads those paying full price to essentially subsidise those buying petrol at a discounted price. That's just wrong.

The fact the AA are in the media every day accusing fuel companies of ripping off customers is hypocrisy at it's best. The fact the Commerce Commission refuse to act in the same way the ACCC did once again just shows how inept they are.

I look at it this way, the discounting brings the price down  which is good, also market forces should be allowed, if discounting is what the consumer wants then why not or are we advocating a return to the Muldoon era interventionism.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Fuel discounting is bring down prices in the same way a Briscoes 60% off sale brings prices down. It's a false economy when the price is heavily inflated in the first place.

This is nothing like Muldoon era intervention - it's simply ensuring that a market is opeting in a far way and not being skewed.

But it doesnt bring the prices down. It keeps them higher without a discount applied.

I dont ever shop at a supermarket enough to get a discount there, and the AA one is limited to a fill of a small car.

I dont think they should limit the discounts etc, but the AA should STFU about high prices when they are behind the crappest discount scheme of all.

Maybe we should form a consortium. If the govt starts a fuel business/consortium will that help bring prices down? I suppose we need to produce oil (petroleum) to do that I imagine?

Another 3c increase in Dunedin, taking 91 to $2.099

Guess it is still sub $2 in most of the upper North Island

Mark: Yesterday I filled up in Whangarie and paid $1.699 a litre for 91 ... why when I look out of my window here do I see 91 selling for $1.999 a litre ?

Does a 34,000 litre fuel tanker really cost $10,000 to drive from Marsdon Point to the Auckland ?

Or is there some extra Auckland tax that the petrol stations have to pay ?

Just curious :-)

My wife was paying $1.60 in Takanini when I was paying over $2 in Martinborough...
