Ethanol containes I think 4% less energy when comparing with equivalent volume of liquid to petrol. So it really should be a bit cheaper if it's mixed with petrol. Although it does boost the octane rating a bit. 95 is overpriced compared with 91 if going by $/Energy.

Modern cars do have knock sensors and oxygen sensors so giving it 91 will give you best $/km ratio.

the thing i dont get is, 96 used to be about 6c dearer than 91, then when they changed to 95 the price went up to about 10-12c, and sometimes it can be as high as 20c dearer

Although in practice people will then hit the gas pedal harder more often possibly negating the save or worse, maybe.

Surely not 20c per litre worse though right... say you have an average car that does 9.7L/100KM or 10.3km/Litre

and fuel prices say 1.90 so 20c is 0.105L which is like 1km worth of fuel.... i like my lower rpm torque just fine too, but at 20c extra it feels like they're doing it because they can.. and they can precisely because of this topic... the prices don't have to be publically displayed.
