I'm not sure if the new Mustang really is a good replacement for the Commodore. If you look at it's home market, the Mustang is priced and positioned at quite a lower price range than the Commodore. I haven't driven the latest generation Mustang but I had the "pleasure of driving the a rental back when they had just released the new retro-look Mustang.

It was a near new V6 with less than 3000 miles on it. I loved the retro-styling, very much F1 Mach-like from the 70s but what an awful car to drive. The interior was so horribly cheap and plastic that I was afraid to break stuff off by touching it. The ride was a strange mixture of being very bouncy but yet spine-ruining harsh over bumps. It felt very wobbly in corners and the V6 was so gutless that I had to stop and see if it really wasn't a 4 cylinder under the hood. After 3000 miles, I was very happy to get rid of it to be honest.

A few years later, about six years ago, I rented an equally near-new 2011 Chevy Camaro V6 (3.6L). I was very, very pleasantly surprised by the new Camaro. Granted, it wasn't expecting much - especially after my ordeal with that Mustang. But the Camaro, which really is an Aussie car anyway, felt very refined, very solid. Certainly the V8 SS model is the one to have but the 3.6L V6 was spirited enough for me to get a huge dressing down by an Alabama State Trooper and left quite a few long stretched marks at the lights. The interior felt very nice as well. Plastic, sure but not feeling very cheap at all. All the switch gear felt solid, smooth and able to withstand prolonged use. My only gripe was the hilariously impractical boot opening. The boot itself is fine, it is very spacious for this type of car. However, the trunk opening itself is so small that I had to wrestle my suitcase in and out of the boot every night during my road-trip through the South West of the USA. To the point where I simply left my suitcase in the trunk, bought myself a cheap sports bag and just took whatever I needed out of my trunk... turning my trunk into a wardrobe on wheels.

The Camaro was a great car and it was a great insult that GM didn't bring a RHD Camaro to Australia at launch, it would have sold very well

I would pick the Camaro over the Mustang any day of the week, provided they release a RHD version of it this year.

I think for that kind of money I'd be trying to find an nice high revving NA car. It seems the age of petroleum has passed us. Get an E46 M3 or Honda Civic Type R and put it in the garage...

I think for that kind of money I'd be trying to find an nice high revving NA car. It seems the age of petroleum has passed us. Get an E46 M3 or Honda Civic Type R and put it in the garage...

The top of the budget would be $90K

The E36 M3 Evo is the best M3 made to date. Best engine, Best sound, Best gearbox, Best handling. Try and prove me wrong.

Mike, Buy a M3 for the missus so she can beat the V8 SC around the track without trying too hard. Store in garage = Profit. They are already starting to skyrocket in the E36 shape.

If you need a sensible family car for your wife that needs to be a jack of all trades, like school round, kids to sport, shopping, taking rubbish to the dump etc , all the boring day to day stuff, you should look else where. I assume that you have such a vehicle already to suit that purpose.

So, if your wife is a car person and likes fast cars and doing track days, like my son and I, and she likes the Mustang, go and buy one without delay and enjoy every minute of it ! The V8 of course as the exhaust noise is half the experience. Who cares if the boot is small or it's hard to get into the back seat, if she is going to work in it every day by herself and you both take it for a thrash at the weekend, there is not many vehicles of that sort available in that price range.

Our family of four had a rather limp version,the V6, in convertible form as a rental for a few days in Hawaii a couple of years ago and it was great fun. It had horrid gold cloth trim but cruising along with the roof down i was enjoying it so much I couldn't have cared less what it looked like.

You buy a car like this with the heart because you want it not because you are going to be 100% sensible and get your accountant to do a business case for it first. The car has to give you the warm fuzzees so that when you park it in the garage and walk away, you turn and look at it and say to yourself, love that car !

SSV redline sportswagon. Space, looks, grunt, sound, reliability with simple engineering and not the constant headaches you get with euro cars when they age.

bwahahahaha... Failing coils? Failing fuel pumps? Windows? Radiators? Failed security systems?

You might not notice them in NZ with your small amount of commodores, but here, these are known faults that have stuck around for the last 10-20 years.

So as they age, they're still crap.

Edit: I do happen to live in the commodore capital of Australia, and 20ks from the factory.

Own a 10 year old VE SS-V - got it 6 years ago @ 75ks and now its at 185ks - and re the faults you named:

Failing coils? Nope
Failing fuel pumps? Nope
Windows? Nope
Radiators? Nope
Failed security systems? Nope.

Note: Have had water pump, alternator and engine mounts though - but not super expensive to repair - unlike the Euros some are suggesting.

Maybe I'm lucky - or maybe the supposed faults and frequency thereof are overstated?

You must not be aware of the amazing offerings in the European category for 80K. You can be in a near new C63 or Audi S3/4/6 for that money. We imported a 2012 B8.5 top spec S4 from Japan. It cost 45K after it was landed, Cant remember KMS but around 40-50. Still int condition with mechanical warranty thats been used once without any problems. Valid for 5 years.

Sorry dude - nearly new is not NEW - not to me anyway.

However I do appreciate that near delivers great value - its why I brought a 4 year old car @ $33k and not a new one @ $70k.

And unless the euros you mention have a V8 then it ain't comparable either - I like my V8 too much :)

So of these - in a V8 - the newest I could find on Trademe with max spend of $80k:

S4 - 2007 - 4.2l V8 - 55ks @ $25k - Cheap yes but real old.
S6 - 2013 - 4l Twin Turbo - 23ks @ $80k - Yeah but its 4 years old! : )
C63 - 2014 - 6l V8 - 29kS @ $78 - Umm - but it's 3 years old! and ...and.... and

Um so yeah - what was my point? : p

PS: Maintenance and repair cost still scare the crap out of me though. e.g. I'm a fan of Ray Donavon so I looked into the car he drives, you know cos I'm just like him...so I was amazed at the price/value of used examples - until I watched this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPJ64sTa7KI
