Batman:

Until today it's still a Tui ad for me. This canal has been around for a while, and so have the same and the wind.

Yes, but has that combination of so big a vessel in that same part of the canal with such a bad sandstorm ever occurred before?

Maybe it has but with the human factor, mr cockup can always come to visit.

This is one of the biggest container ships in the world, and from the pictures it seems to have been just about fully loaded. It may well have been the first time such a large vessel has transited the Canal in such weather conditions.

I think that may point out that this class of ship is just too big for Suez, unless accompanied by several tugs to keep it in the channel.
That would be both extremely expensive, and astoundingly cheap compared to the cost of this catastrophe.

Looks like they have a digger on site to help the loader, but as the title suggests.... may need to be bigger haha

They had better be fast but careful freeing it up.

Imagine the palava if it breaks in half where it is.

Unlikely. These ships are built to rigorous maritime engineering standards.

Ok I have no engineering know-how whatsoever so here is my brilliant contribution: Use inflatables to plug the canal at both ends of the ship. Pump water in to raise the level until the ship can float free. Use tugs to turn ship. Remove plugs.

Unfortunately the plugs at each end would need to be massive (in the true sense of the word) to be able to hold back the weight of that much water. It may be easier to try attach the buoyancy directly to the ship.

I wonder if they'd have better luck focusing on the stern rather than the bow. Dredge under and around it to free it up and give it some space to move. Then use the tugs to pull the bow free.

Depends on the flow of current and the forces exerted on which parts of the ship

BlueOwl:

Before we get too pedantic about the type of vehicle involved, the title is reference to a children's story about a little yellow digger that got stuck. The workers sent in a bigger digger to get it out, which then too got stuck. Then a bigger digger was sent in, and so on.

Oh, I just assumed it was a nod to the "you're gonna need a bigger boat" line in Jaws...
