Show them your vaccine passport and watch them wave you thru? Anyone can make up some hypothetical situation but its clear some here will adopt a confrontational stance straight up before even talking to see what the road block is about.

All the road blocks up here either has the local cop right there or on radio and so far all they have done is check that travel is permitted or not as per the COVID rules. Right now no to suspect that this will change

Ultimately people will visit places where they feel welcome and spend their money there.

Personally I do not think any one ethnic group should be legally entitled to prevent the citizens of New Zealand from driving on roads that are public roads. If it's a private road then sure - you can decide what to do with it. If it is part of the public road network then nobody other than the police or other emergency services, councils undertaking work on notified road closures or similar should have any ability to stop anyone driving on the highway to inspect anything.

The next step from accepting that is to accept vigilante justice (just looking after our community...) and I am sure nobody wants to advocate for that.

Why be a dick about this.

If local iwi dont want you in the area , turn around & go home.
They are trying to protect their extended families from covid .
You are just going for a holiday drive , and possibly bringing Ak's covid outbreak into their region .

A white attitude thats no better than the clowns who refuse to wear masks in Ak supermarkets/shops .

Using one's legal rights is not being a "D".

In some particular circumstances iwi are able to operate checkpoints.  Outside of that it's an illegal restriction of freedom of movement of law abiding citizens.

BTW the term "White Attitude" reads as a derogatory racial stereotype.

’+1’ is not enough here. Well put, thanks.

Thats the funny thing taking the law into your own hands... the intent might be good but the impact on others might be troubling.

The road to Maitai Bay is a private road over private land. They can decide who does and does not use their land.

I doubt anyone on here has a problem with access to private land and private roads being at the discretion of the land owner. That is the fundamental right of any land owner.

I'm not familiar with Maitai Bay but can't help wondering that in the past access has been relatively freely available to the extent some users were unaware of the fact it was private land. Now that the owners have decided to restrict access, there are people upset that their access has been restricted. The free run has ended and they need to accept that.

I am uncomfortable about road blocks operated by private individuals/groups on public roads. They may well have very noble motives but it can also be the thin edge of the wedge for those with "political" motives and we have already seen some of these operatives using Covid for their own ends.

If the people manning these road blocks are genuinely concerned about Covid wreaking havoc with their friends and family they should really be putting their efforts into getting those people vaccinated.

The road blocks will not stop Covid not matter what they think. It will get into their communities sooner or later. The road blocks around Auckland didn't stop Covid from escaping out of Auckland what makes them think their road blocks will work any better?

Since when are racist comments like this acceptable on Geekzone?

Edit: In fact it’s probably appropriate to lock it before it deteriorates further.

For quite some time. The BS being spouted about He Puapua is but one example, let alone the many dog whistles in the Covid thread.

Yall keep making this out to just be about getting the locals vaccinated and ignore the complex mishmash of issues some of which are lack of regional healthcare investment, lack of government true and resources spread out amongst low population density. Hospital's capacity is already running near it's limits and they are quite far aware from the areas that get visited. Now imagine what happens when you add in 10,000's of visitors and consider what even a small outbreak of delta could do

4 DHB's have signed on asking to keep single dose and unvaccinated out of Northland

Your holiday is not more important than the health outcomes of the locals

It’s almost like they had to fundraise themselves for vaccination buses to try and get vaccinations into remote areas. Oh wait..

Dynamic:

One of my favourite Northland campgrounds has been closed for the summer.  Maitai Bay (commonly known as Matai Bay) is 45km east of Kaitaia and is a beautiful spot.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northland-age/news/popular-maitai-bay-closed-for-christmas/BQHTPLJ3F2YYYHGVHKOOH4KH6Q/

The claim is that the campsite can be re-opened once 90% of locals get vaccinated, but I doubt this target will ever be hit in that region.  The local iwi have been weilding increasing influence over that section of DoC land and I would be far from surprised if the camp site never re-opens.  Roadblocks have been set up in pre-COVID times as well which resulted in DoC caving in to demands, but I can't find the news articles on these at present.

Most of the road blocks, which were on private roads and so entirely legal, were because a-holes were tearing up the beach and refusing to leave cars in the car park.

I feel the underlying reason people are advocating for roadblocks for "their community", even if they are not consciously aware of it and have probably convinced themselves it is the noblest of intentions is subconsciously a means of power and control. It's an opportunity for them to show they have power over the government as part of a wider agenda beyond just the virus....

I've been stopped and checked by civilians loads of time.  Once or twice by summer holiday Uni students manning random spot check stops for up to date car rego and warrant.  I pulled over, showed the evidence, had a chat an went on my way.  Much more frequently I get stopped by other civilians in hi-vis vests and holding "lollipop" signs at school crossings.  I wait patiently, then pass through when they allow me.  When I've passed through private (white) farms to access flying fishing streams, I've stopped and checked it was OK with the owner.  None of these caused me fear and none make the newspapers.

If I was going North for the holidays, I'd be fine with being pulled over by a local, showing our vaccine passes and heading on our way.  I'd probably have a chat and ask about the surf and good fishing spots.  Again, no fear in my mind.

It's interesting that other people see the same situation from a complete different angle.  In my mind's eye I see a friendly local checking something that I'm happy to show.  Others see "intimidation", "heavies", "vigilantes", "sepratism" etc.  I'm not saying I'm right and anyone else is wrong.  I'm just fascinated from a personal physchology point of view, how different people from different backgrounds can have such opposed perceptions of the same situation.  Again, not saying anyone is right or wrong.

I try not to live in fear of the boogey man, but I guess others may have perfectly valid reasons from their past for holding some fears.

That's an interesting perspective.  Personally, I'm a supporter of people obeying the law and I think it sets a dangerous precedent when we allow any group - police, military or just friendly locals - to step outside the law and establish their own processes and impose requirements on other people.

How about I set up a random checkpoint in my neighbourhood to breath-test drivers?  I have a valid need to protect my family from death on the road, so surely this is legitimate?  It's a more clear and immediate danger than COVID.  Or how about a check point to test vehicle exhaust gases and noise levels?  Where does it stop?
