In Australia you will get a ticket if you sit in the right lane unnecessarily. A pity the same doesn't happen here.

they do it now and then, put i think its more that someone is intentionally holding up traffic. we get it a bit on passing lanes here where idiots will speed up or change lanes in an effort to stop people overtaking. dashcams are great.

It also probably depends on which state you are in.

Police should be enforcing drivers that don't move left out of the fast lane!!

I drive on the new Puhoi motorway and the number of drivers that sit in the far right hand lane and will not move left is just off the planet

You mean the long distance lane.

Local traffic sticks to the left, so people can exit/merge if they are only going between a couple of on/off ramps.

Long distance traffic uses the right lane (if they can maintain 100km/h) so they are not creating kinematic waves or interacting with semi-local traffic in the left lanes.

If you want to ask NZTA, the Ministry, or the Minister to re-define it, feel free to do so.

Until that time, legislation (posted above) merely refers to it as the right lane and says you may not use it unless passing, turning right, the lanes to the left are congested, or other signage/obstructions/conditions require you to do so.

So, no, it's not the long distance lane.

No, in the sense that no lane is the speeding lane.

But it doesn't mean that "I'm doing the limit" is a valid reason to sit in the right hand lane.

Except when it is.
Approximately twice every day when all are congested.

@raytaylor what is a long distance lane? passing traffic uses the right lane and that is it you must keep left

The 'long distance lane' is the 'I can't be arsed dealing with merging traffic at every onramp' lane.

"AA Motoring Affairs expert Mark Stockdale explains.

“International law has long required modern cars to overstate true speed. The applicable standard for most vehicles sold in NZ is a European standard that specifies that speedometers must not indicate a speed less than the vehicle’s true speed, or a speed greater than the vehicle’s true speed by an amount of more than 10 percent plus 4 km/h.”

What does this mean in real driving terms?

Well, another way to look at it is, at an indicated speed of 100km/h, the vehicle's true speed must be between 87.3 km/h and 100km/h."

I thought this was to protect the car manufacturers from lawsuits resulting from speeding fines.
i.e. speed is calculated from wheel revolutions so:
- if a Muppet puts a oversized tyre on the car, the speedo would understate the cars speed resulting in a speeding fine (tax surcharge).
- The Muppet could then accuse the car manufacturer of faulty speedo....

What are drivers thinking when they see 400 meters or more of no traffic in front of them in the right hand lane of multi-lane motorways?

  • That'll be enough following distance.
  • I wonder why everyone is giving me the fingers?
  • Great! There's no traffic today.
  • I thought the other cars were travelling too fast. 96 km/h in my car with a high speedometer reading is surely close enough.
  • She'll be right
  • Why would I change lane, this is fine.
  • It's amazing that I don't need a mirror to drive. The driving instructor was wrong.
  • I can't quite get these noodles into my mouth when travelling at the same speed as other traffic, so I'll slow down.
  • I can't watch Netflix when travelling with the flow of traffic.
  • I'll show them that I'm right
  • Why aren't more people pulled over by the cops for tailgating?
  • It's my right to travel how I like

Ah, the lazy entitled ute/SUV lane!

If trucks can handle merging traffic despite being 5x longer, travelling slower, and having no power to accelerate, you can too.

If you can't be arsed driving, get in a bus.

That's not the excuse in use; it's that the left lane is congested.

And if you've got a ten second following distance, maybe you should reconsider whether the left lane is as congested as you think it is.
