well if they can allow you to remove the wheels, connectivity, and the brakes / suspension the LR model 3 will easily sneak in under the rebate cap. it's so near yet so far.

They could software lock out 5 Kwh from the battery pack but then allow it to be reenabled as a post sale purchase software upgrade..

I think the boffins at the MoT might get a bit grumpy about it thou....

Why? It’s not like it’s their money.

Once again the politics of envy rears its head. The world’s richest billionaire indeed. Because the govt can only be seen to suck up to some overseas billionaires. Cough Amazon cough.

Remember the main reason for the levy is to dissuade people from buying higher emitting vehicles.

IMO we dont really need it, I would rather a soft rollout but Tesla is selling as many cars as it can before we get the Y here.

Then why is there any prices cap in the first place,  because its an incredibly regressive policy from a equity POV,

and if you want to see the politics of envy at work , just let the rich get the 8K to buy a $280K Audi GT Etron...

Speaking of which, I was pondering whether there will be a glut of Model 3s hit the used market when the Y is finally officially launched here? Some 3s have appeared on TMe with the reason of a new (sometimes Tesla) car ordered and about to arrive.

People who like their Model 3 but want the extra space and the hatchback that the Y offers.

I'm sure there will be a few but most of these are bought this year I doubt they'll be sold at 6-12months old..

And there are very few used 3's for sale, waiting for a glut and low prices isnt a good tactic imo

Is it an EV or not? Is the purpose to encourage an ICE off the road and an EV on, or not? It’s the enticement element of human nature you aren’t considering. Because if you are dropping $280K on a car then you can probably afford to run it on a mixture of kitten’s tears and unicorn farts. But I’m more about the sub $120K mark which will encompass EV utes and a larger proportion of long range EVs.

That e-Tron buyer will have contributed about $40000 in gst for that purchase. As I have pointed out previously, the gst on a $79995 ev more than covers the rebate.

This year’s $90K Ioniq5 is 2024’s $45000 family car.

I wouldn’t be waiting, I prefer sedans.

Yeah, but that's not how its funded. ( or so we have been told) - the scheme is zero cost to the general taxpayer, its being funded by the extra duties being placed on High emitters...

I agree that if the government was serious they would simply say bugger the bad press an fund an even bigger scheme and also incentivised high daily mileage users  ( Taxis/couriers etc) to move to EVs as soon as possible, - but politics is the art of the possible...

Many older people find sedans too low when compared to SUVs, for getting in and out of. I know someone who wouldn't buy the model 3 for this very reason.

Snip

Yeah, but that's not how its funded.

It is until the 1st of April.

There is quite a bit of dishonesty being displayed by car salespeople at the moment. Along the lines of “Better get in now before the rebates run out in March”. When I respond “Okay so you’ll refund my deposit if you can’t get me my vehicle by the time the rebate ends? Because I can’t afford it otherwise.” Some have said yes they will refund and are happy put it in writing, right through to, No, that is beyond our control so we would enforce the contract. I am confident the scheme will continue beyond March though because the government said it would.

But I would prefer that as soon as you order a ‘clean’ vehicle (and pay a deposit, or in Tesla’s case a non-refundable order fee) that you apply to the relevant authority for the rebate, which is then approved, but the money is only paid once the contract is complete (i.e. delivery and registration). That way people who are really stretching to get a ‘clean’ car are not left in the lurch.

But to circle back to my original point. It’s okay for a multinational car rental company to buy 100s of EVs and get millions in rebates AND claim the gst back as well. But not okay for one private citizen to get the rebate because they are ‘rich’ and the car they really want that suits their needs costs $80001?

I had pondered whether companies could sell you a vehicle where things like wheels (or seats) were an aftermarket accessory. Thereby bringing the cost below the magic figure. Or software limit something, for instance the premium sound that is fitted to the Model 3 SR+ but only activated in the LR and Performance. I think Renault have a scheme overseas where you own the car but lease the battery. A bit more difficult in the new Teslas as I believe the battery pack is a structural element of the car.

You would hope it would be raised with inflation which is pretty rampant at the moment. But it is good to see some of them having the prices lowered to get them under the cap. IMO 80k for an EV is a huge amount for a car. Hopefully 5-10 years they will be 50k for 1000km range cars. China are producing some now with this sort of range
