I don't have a horse in this "self-driving car" race. I would like to see self-driving cars become cheaper, better.

Rain / fog seems to be a fundamental problem, but Musk's "vision only" doesn't feel like the solution to me for low-vision driving.

We don't use flap bird wings on our airplanes, flap tail fins on our boats, photosensitive chemicals undergoing isomerization in our digital CCD cameras.

From a review of a book on evolution: Writer Daniel Milo said nature is full not of excellence but of mediocrity - not cut-throat competitive champions but merely the manifold forms of life that survive just well enough not to die [...] Good Enough is an important intervention that boasts none of the mediocrity that Milo finds everywhere at work – or rather, asleep on the job – in the natural world.

Forbes: What’s Happening With Luminar Stock?

the recent decline is likely due to a broader selloff in the U.S. stock market and the mid-August public listing of AEye, another lidar player, which gives investors yet another option to gain exposure to the lidar market.

Luminar might be well-positioned in this market, given that it has production program partnerships with OEMs including Volvo, Daimler Trucks, and China’s largest auto company SAIC. Luminar’s tech will also be standard on Volvo’s next-generation electric SUV.

The Ora good cat was scheduled to launch in the UK in Q1 for 25K  so likely north of $50K if they ever came here,

+ 2022 is pretty much the sweet spot for EV buying, as the clean car discount is expected to reduce to $4500 at some point in 2023....

The rebate was scheduled to stay at $8k for 2 years I think? Given its starting late already...

Ora Cat should be cheaper here than UK I think, given we have larger subsidies and no 10% Chinese import duty etc

It started in July 2021, so 2 years would end in July 2023,...

Correct, but the EV discount has already begun, as the govt is simply spending regular tax money on it until the "Levy" on high emitters is passed ( likely in February)

But thats a separate temporary scheme.. Anyhow lets see what gets passed when it gets passed. People will have a window of $8k subsidy before any drop.

So is there anything to confirm the current subsidies going past March, or is that still up in the air?

Hasn’t the Minister of Finance ‘Granted’ (pun intended) himself an extra billion dollars to tackle climate change? So if the feebate legislation hasn’t passed by 1 April then they may be able to dip into that. I don’t think it will be required though unless Ute drivers in NZ stage a coup!
