ok Petrol has fallen under $2.00 a litre for 91, i just paid $1.96 at Rotorua PaknSave
WOW!
We can only dream of sub-$2.00 petrol here in Auckland...
In saying that, it's a fair bit cheaper than it was: Gaspy tells me that Gull Whenuapai is doing $2.03/l today.

Gull 20c off special today - Auckland petrol $2.13 and diesel $1.94. Seems to have dragged others down too - local Z diesel $2.21 with discount.

Haven't seen fuel prices that low in a very long time.

wouldn't this be the best time to phase out the subsidy ...
Wait... people actually use 91 in their cars? What sort of cars do you not care enough about to use decent octane fuel?

What subsidy?
The government have temporarily reduced the amount they take from you. But the ‘temporary’ nature of the reduction keeps getting extended (not because an election is within 12 months of course). Fuel is now cheaper than when they panicked.
Of note, if you take the ‘Goff Tax’ off that Costco price, it is $1.85 per litre.

My cars do just fine on 91. Not everyone needs a four ton nature crusher to get around town.

A big part of it is the exchange rate, which has not been good lately. If NZ hadn't increased the OCR it potentially could be a lot higher due to the exchange rate. So the price can quickly rocket up again. The thing is that this was supposed to help reduce inflation, and Infact it has reduced inflation figures. Inflation would be higher if they hadn't done this, and fuel costs get added to the cost of most goods too due to transport. It also takes the load of people who face other price increases.

I bought a 2010 Honda Fit just for golf. It uses 91. Small on the outside , a Tardis on the inside. 3 sets of clubs and folded trundlers, easy....

It was done to help people. Its not cheap. But it helps poor people and rich people. End of the day it helps poor people.
Globally, its reducing, so its the right time. Say petrol was increasing? when is the right time, as its basically money for jam for consumers. What else can we subsidise? Toilet paper, jam, margarine??? Would have been easier to just not bother, as its a problem when they added the subsidy and its a problem when they drop it.

Indeed. Most cars are fine on 91. Some high compression performance engines are no go.
