“If consumers more actively shop around, competition is likely to increase amongst suppliers to help drive down prices.”

Motorists should make use of fuel price monitoring apps such as Gaspy, he said."

Maybe they should have just read this thread about 4 years ago and saved us all the cost and expansion of the public service...

Ah, so it's on consumers to have the time and options available open to them to shop around to make competition happen, not the regulator.

God help us.

There is surely diminishing returns for how much out of your way you have to go to save money vs. the kind of discount you're likely to get, on a fuel used vs. cost per litre saving? Or does the regulator expect people on the Hibiscus Coast to drive to Costco to fill up for a few cents a litre off?

We have made changes to our life style to mitigate transport costs. The Mitsi PHEV spends most of its time in pure EV mode and we have topped up the dinosaur juice about every 6 weeks. Since closing our business late last year my wife has been commuting into Poneke by train for work.

I looked at our accounts over the weekend and our petrol expenses have dropped by around 60%.My mobility scooter when I am able to use it will reduce our costs further.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

We have an app here for the 711 fuel stations where you can lock in the best fuel prices in the area you currently in. Some areas near to where I work the fuel is as low as $155 sometimes. All you do is lock that price in and it’s valid at any 711 station for a week. It’s saved me a lot of money. Possibly a business opportunity for somebody in NZ to implement.

I recall something similar in NZ but you had to prepay for the petrol to lock in the price. Generally I found that a bad idea because sometimes the price would drop. With this 711 app if the price drops you simply don’t use it.

Just looking at Gaspy - sorted by location, rather than price.

Interesting that when sorted by closest location, the prices for 91 are significantly higher than if I were to travel 5+km to a petrol station.

Under 5km from home: many petrol stations - most (if not all) standard brands. Prices ranging from 247.7c per litre at Pak n Save through to 273.9c per litre at Z Energy

Over 5km from home there's a sudden drop: 238.9 at a Mobil, 240.7 at a Gull, then if I were to travel 11.3km I could get 223.7 from a Caltex.

My question is this - does the wholesale cost of fuel differ from Mairangi Bay/Albany/Wairau to Riverhead/Westgate/etc? Seems like cartel behaviour to me.

What difference is there between Gull Forrest Hill (252.7c), Gull Greville Rd (258.7c) and Gull Albany Village (259.7c) other than price?

Great, did not realize that. Does it allow you to lock in a price without paying for the fuel, and use that price to fillup anywhere in NZ within a week? If so I should recommend to my folks.

No, its a real time crowd source updated price listing of fuel stations sorted by location. If you want the cheaper fuel it allows you to see where it is and its free.

I can't speak for Auckland but its common practice for retailers around a low price station to lower their prices to compete. Even some of the big 4 lower prices in different parts of the city.

IMO if your not using gaspy your throwing money away

Wombat1: Wow. Can’t believe those prices of fuel in NZ now. When I left in 2021 I thought $2.20 was bad enough. How does a family do it now a days? My folks told me the other day they $3 was pretty much the norm now.

And this is with a .25c reprieve (temporary) that's coming back on.

Here in the south you can still score 2.30/l or below on discount days.

The gap between 91/95 is also 19-20c rounded now. I still recall the days of 9c different. Which you would think would be a constant. Other than perhaps a rort because most ecos are high compression and use 95...

No local refined anymore.

Went to Gull yesterday. The Z over the road was 5c cheaper with "pumped", which I assume requires their card (I don't have one) so I pulled up to the Gull pump. The price shown on the pump was 5c cheaper than on the main sign. I filled up, then as I was driving away I noticed that the main sign now matched the price shown on the pump (and also the Z over the road). It seems that I pulled in just as the price dropped!

45 minutes later I drove past the BP in Pongakawa which was another 12c cheaper...

Now they are all at it, basically says the regulators have run out of ideas on how to reduce inflation, and "you're on your own now"

"Reserve Bank chief economist Paul Conway says Kiwis should shop around for better deals, wait for sales and swap banks and utility providers to improve competition and productivity in the economy."

These might be reasons for the Oil price that was dropping stabilizing or going up?

13th Oct 2022
Saudi Arabia: OPEC+ oil production cut 'purely economic'
Saim Dušan Inayatullah

Riyadh has rejected accusations that it was supporting Moscow amid US objections to the slash in oil production. Russia, also a member of OPEC+, stands to gain from rising oil prices.
https://www.dw.com/en/saudi-arabia-opec-decision-to-reduce-oil-production-purely-economic/a-63421428

Then again in April this year !

Saudis, other oil giants announce surprise production cuts
Saudi Arabia and other major oil producers say they will cut oil production by 1.15 million barrels per day from May until the end of 2023
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudis-cut-oil-production-500000-barrels-day-98302307

Nothing like us in the west having the best friends :-)
I guess as we move from refining our own fuel to buying it in refined we might get pinged for price changes faster?

Been announced that subsidy will end in June

Will I be able to buy fuel with sharetank before it ends and keep the lower prices?
