What I wonder is how long Tesla etc plan to support those massive touch panels long term, like 20 years from now your M3 screen dies will they still manufacture replacement parts to the same quality or abandon customers and leave third party companies to do it.

As long as they support any other component of the car, I guess.

"I'm so disappointed that the i drive touch screen and wireless charger were not included because of the worldwide semiconductor shortage."

How long do you think other car manufacturers supply parts for their old cars?

Like with any other car, there will be a point where you will need to go through junkyards to get replacement parts. The screen in a Model 3 is just that though, a screen. It gets its signal from the Media Computer over HDMI so in theory, third party screens are possible going forward.

You've been able to buy them on ebay for years already.

Tesla still support the og roadster in some ways and are doing replacement MCUs for first then model S's that are a decade old.

Hey when do they tell you the VIN & rego? I'd quite like to get the insurance done before I get there. When I went to insure the Leaf it took nearly 2 hours because they didn't know how to code a car that doesn't have an engine displacement. Obviously that will be less of an issue, especially if I go the Vero Tesla route but I'd prefer not to be on hold for a million years just the same.

Go to your order page on the Tesla website, do a view source and search for "LRW" - if you have a VIN assigned it will be there.

There is also a Chrome extension which will do this automatically for you.

Oh yes, I can actually see the VIN on the invoice too, now that I look. Ta!

I assume you got an email from Tesla with an ETA for when the cars will arrive at their delivery centre.

What was that date out of interest? I received the email on 1 Feb and the ETA is 4 March. My order date was 5 Jan.

Just wondering if their 4 March estimate is still current...

I ordered on 30th November with an initial estimate of delivery to me in early March. Around the middle of Jan I got an email saying they would "soon" be contacting me to schedule delivery. Today (14th Feb) I got the text to schedule the delivery appointment; have chosen 2nd of March. Could've gotten 1st March but they only had 3pm and 4pm available, whereas I can get 10am on the 2nd and spend the day mid-life-crisising in my brand new car.

Ah I see, you're ahead of me in the process then.

Looks like a 2-3 week period to add on after they receive cars at their delivery centre and reach out to schedule delivery. Good to know, I'm realistically looking at mid-late March for pick up.
