Its mostly because if you ordered a Microsoft OneSelfDrive seven seater people mover, what turns up would be a two seater SmartCar.

Its mostly because if you ordered a Microsoft OneSelfDrive seven seater people mover, what turns up would be a two seater SmartCar.

And you'd get half way to your destination, the car would stop and you'd see a message on the dashboard informing that you needed to upgrade to a new, bigger, shinier car to complete your journey.

That's not fair!! The 7 seater people mover would be what turns up, but would be prone to issues and a week after you received it you would be informed by Microsoft that in 6 months it is going to auto-up?grade to the two seater SmartCar! But you'll never have to upgrade it ever again after that as they will now just "improve" parts of it as needed.

But there will be a downgrade option for the first month only after that upgrade.

But surely that was a serious response. Sacrifice the one for the good of all. Kill a cyclist as you head for the side of the street to avoid a head on collision. Cyclists only have one passenger ( except tandom cycles where they have two passengers with a total cool factor only equal to a half a person in an autonomous car anyway) so that is always at least as good an option as any other and more often than not is less loss of life so is the best option.

Also any cyclist dumb enough to be peddling a machine with no autonomous accident avoiding capabilities deserves to die.

1. Self driving cars with sensors and algorithms galore will always be safer than humans. No tiredness, texting, being idiots, breaking road rules, not drink or stoned, not angry.

2. Redundancies would be built in as they are on aircraft. So if a sense failed, or the OS sh^t itself, the redundancy software would brake steadily.

3. With every car obeying the rules, it will be hugely safer.

4. Avoidance. A car can decide how to it an obstacle it cannot avoid. A head on wth braking is safer than swerving. The car can absorb the impact, airbags go off.

We have about 400 deaths a year? If you remove the human error factor, that has to drop 90+% surely. If you make the car decide the best way to hit the obstacle, that will help further. Theoretically, if every car was self drive, there would be no accidents between cars. That leaves road conditions, which the car will adapt to conservatively, unavoidables such as a person running out between cars, objects falling off a truck, animals. These the car will minimise damage to the occupants and the targets if human.

Court cases? None. At least not between the owner, maybe between the manufacturer of said car was proven to be software design faulty.

A human could never achieve what a self drive car can in terms of reducing accidents caused by itself, and reducing carnage caused by others.

To those who posit it is an extreme position to worry about people hacking cars etc.
The future is already here.

It also raises questions re security, stability? Would you trust MS to provide the software for your car with their security record? How do you remove all personally identifiable information to stop peole tracking you and advertising to you based on where you go and who you visit and whom you are in proximity to?
