Maybe I'm lucky - or maybe the supposed faults and frequency thereof are overstated?

Yours being 10 might be inside the timeline too.

I daily drive a 21 year old euro V8... the most expensive thing has been a radiator.. $199.

Haven't replaced water pump, alternator or engine mounts either :D

Did do a thermostat housing... $39

I've owned two SSV's and put high mileage on both - about to buy my third. Would highly recommend reliability based on experience (not speculation). My simple engineeing statement meant to capture if things do go wrong they tend to be low cost repairs. The euros that I've owned have all been great new but massive headaches as they got up in mileage and my local garage could not repair the typical faults, they had to go to specialists.

Yeah that has been my experience too but based on a sample of 1 - and this experience has been good enough that a VF SS Redline (used) will very likely be my next car.

The euros I quoted above - e.g. the S6 and C63 are imo awesome cars - and clearly 2nd hand they can be got at a significant reduction on new.

But they are both north of $160k new, so when it comes time to service or repair them you are doing this to a $160k car and I would expect these costs will be in proportion to that new value.

Edit - Forgot to add - was at a Ford dealer yesterday and the Mustang sure does look mean - so I reckon a long test drive is a must for the OP. :) Look forward to your update post your test drives...

What a shame! As someone who has owned two late model high performance BMW's (Latest is a 335D Wagon with Xdrive, adaptive suspension and adaptive steering, I can honestly say coming from Audi's and high performance Japanese cars in the past, it's the nicest car I've ever owned (though the most fun and the one I loved the most was my Audi S4 V8).

But if she doesn't like the look of it, and this is more important to some than others, there are plenty of other exceptionally nice cars available too. The Jag Xe I have been told is exceptional and I drove a couple of XJ-R and XJ-RS models in the past and was utterly blown away.

Jag aren't your dads old jag any more.

Interesting to hear you say that about Audi. We drive a late model 3 series BMW but I have always liked the look of Audi's. Never driven one though. I'd still imagine that the RS6 would be top of my test drive list if I ever win lotto :-)

Interesting to hear you say that about Audi. We drive a late model 3 series BMW but I have always liked the look of Audi's. Never driven one though. I'd still imagine that the RS6 would be top of my test drive list if I ever win lotto :-)

The RS6, Under steering over powered barge.
RS4 is what your after. But even then. Still an average car. Seems to get around ponsonby well enough tho.

She has decided that she does not want another car from Europe she hates that they have no idea as to what is the right side to put the indicator stalk controls etc. It is amusing when she drives my Xtrail to watch the wipers come on at intersections or lane changing etc.

We own two European cars - one Ford Mondeo, made in Belgium, and one Saab 9-3 Aero, made in Sweden. And both have indicators and wipers on OPPOSITE sides of the steering column. So it should be possible to get an European made car that has the controls on the same side as your Xtrail?

Having said, it would be the most unusual reason to pick a certain type/brand of verhicle. Solely based on where your indicator and wiper stalks are located?

Shame she didn't wanted to look at the BMWs. My 2004 E46 Touring was one of the best made, best handling and most reliable cars I've ever owned.

she sees it as a safety issue and a pain in the Gluteus Maximus, a compromise she feels she does not need to make on her budget.

Wow what an odd criteria to base excluding a whole continent's selection of cars on. Surely after a couple of drives she would remember and then it would be a non issue??

She is reminded every day, she currently drives a Skoda and a Nissan Xtrail and it annoys the heck out of her. Yes its a small thing but often its the small things that ruin an experience.
