IMO it is false economy buying a new car that is a lessor brand, vs a second hand near new with some manufacturers warranty on it, top brand car, for the same price. This is because the top brands, such as Toyota, Mazda, and even Hyundai these days, tend to have the more modern technology, and second hand means a lot of the initial depreciation should have already been wiped off it. Some of the new car, lessor brands, in fact can be old designs from other manufacturers, that are built under their own badge.

Kia is not a second tier marque. I would put them in my top three if I were buying a car right now, and that's from the point of view of someone who has owned one previously.

People get obsessive about the first year of depreciation, but it really only matters if you are going to keep the vehicle short term. If you average the TCO over five years then a new car costs about the same as a second hand one.

I was referring more to Chinese brands.

These days it may not be, as they have upped their game a lot, although it is still seen as the cheaper version of the Hyundai brand. Although they did start off being a cheap brand, I used to own one rebadged, and it wasn't a good car, with horrible cheap hard plastics and was just a bad drive.

With buying new vs second hand, if you can save 10k on the price, and you invest that. Over the 5+ years you have the car, you potentially could have a good chunk of money to replace the car with after 5 years. But people can sometimes save upto 20% by shopping around on a new car, so sometimes there can be little cost difference. Field day specials used to be a good police to get a good deal on a new car, although not so much these days. But it all depends on peoples circumstances, and how much time they have to shop around.

Always handy to read the dog and lemon, as to how models fare over time in terms of reliability and what can go wrong. It usually lists all the problems to T, that have gone wrong with mine over time.

Hi all! I've reached a decision!! Thanks again to all who have taken the time to provide their input :)

And drumroll, please.....

........

........A Hyundai Tucson 2.0 FWD! The latest one of course :) Stretched my budget a little bit more... but they are beautiful looking cars!

The drive was great with the comfort, looks, safety rating, and technology provided all in one. I considered the Mazda CX-5 a close second choice, but the fact that they released a completely new one, just made the older one seem less attractive and if it was the Tucson v Older CX-5, I went with the Tucson.

The size is just right, huge luggage space, enough power to do casual towing, and after watching and reading a lot of car reviews... especially AutoExpertTV's John Cadogan (He seems to advocate for Hyundai a lot), I've gone with the Hyundai.

Also, technically I went over budget, and I feel bad. So I can't say that this is the right car to get under 30k.

If all things considered and I absolutely couldn't have stretched my budget any further, I would've gone with the Mazda CX-5. That would've been my pick from the lot.

I did consider a Mitsubishi Outlander, but the size was a little too large and the looks of the car didn't really appeal to my taste.

So my list under 30k:

1. Mazda CX-5

2. Mitsubishi Outlander

3. Kia Sportage (This guy would've been the second pick, it's a really well-built car, but the looks of it was an "ok" for me and a "not nice" for my wife.)

Congratulations, and good choice.

It sounds like you've bought a lower mileage vehicle than you might have originally planned, so the extra capital outlay will probably save you money in the long term.
