Elon Musk needs to start making decisions that lead to profitability. Nine years of loses are going to get stock holders edgy and may well look for a new CEO.

Apparently the day after the financials came out people with reservations for model 3s with standard batteries had their delivery dates pushed out,

Causing lots of concern about whether they will qualify for the full Federal subsidy as Tesla is expected to exceed their 200K US cars sometime in 2018.....

Some Russians weren't impressed:

'I don’t know if this is a conspiracy or not, but in fact it’s a very good trick,' Roscosmos spokesman Igor Burenkov said about the launch in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Thursday."

https://themoscowtimes.com/news/russias-answer-to-elon-musks-space-x-launch-60417

"When Elon Musk on February 6 successfully launched a rocket toward Mars carrying a red Tesla, some saw it as a landmark moment for space exploration.

Others, however, saw Russia’s status as a cosmic superpower evaporate before their eyes. In the battle for space supremacy, SpaceX has defeated Roscosmos. And what better way to digest that news than with a meme?"

Why do we NEED to go to space?

Because it's only a matter of time until the basket we have all our human eggs in gets dropped.

Because we show no capacity to limit ourselves in any way to live within the resources and constraints imposed by the one planet we know we can live on.

This is obvious to many people. They probably spend a fair bit of time explaining to people who never give it a thought

The future is huge. Your descendents will have to live in whatever situation we collectively create.

Space gives us options.

We need options because we show every sign of wrecking this planet before we learn how to behave ourselves. Space buys humanity time to grow up.

I'm sorry, but no. That is the OPPOSITE of the reason we should be going. We created this mess. We have no right to continue to exist if we not only destroy our habitat but that of trillions of other creatures?

What have we done for the universe that gives us rights to colonize elsewhere and destroy another trillion life forms?

When we can show we have something of value to offer another planet, then we might consider spending resources getting there.

Humans are the definition of parasites. When we can prove we can change our behaviour and save our own planet, then we should be allowed to consider space.

err What?

As someone who clearly appreciates the value of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, I can't understand how you could not see the importance of going into space. It is the horizon, the new frontier, the future. It will make or break us as a species. It is what drew the first voyagers to places they did not know existed, like North America and Australia and New Zealand. If you want to go back further, it is what brought us out of Africa. Space is not an option for us. It is a necessity for our ultimate survival. I am very surprised if you don't see that.

What should make or break us as a species, should be our ability to exist within the resources and environment we already have.

"It's exciting" is NOT a good reason to consider taking our parasitic species elsewhere to continue our disgraceful behaviour and put even more species at risk.

I'd argue we haven't earned the right for survival.

Eventually, absolutely. If they can't see an end to Model 3 production problems by June I think things might get more difficult. But maybe not even then. People are invested in the vision. As long as there is progress......

But there is now SO much money involved it may be a case of people not wanting to rock the boat for a good while yet. As long as the share price holds up.....the company is worth FAR more than it has invested to date.

That can't be completely right as you don't get to choose the battery option until you're offered the config. Before that, as reservation is just a reservation.

That's people today.

The people of tomorrow hopefully won't be like us.

That's the point, in a way......getting to tomorrow.

How about this instead? We need to go into space because we are a selfish, aggressive, rapacious, destructive, predatory species without any meaningful consideration for any lifeform including our own who crap in our fishbowl and will inevitably destroy this planet and everything on it unless we are able to spread ourselves to other worlds, which being the parasitic cancer we are, is what we must do in order to continue existing. This is our imperative as a living organism. Whether or not we should continue existing is another question.

That is so far left is about to circle the planet and be coming in from the right!

‘Civilisation’ has always been spread by the adventurous and often by the ruthless... look at society today, it in no way represents the societies of 100 years ago as the expansion of Eastern AND Western civilisation (which incidentally subsumed numerous cultures including the aboriginals and mauri) is what now gives us the ability to BE ‘postmodern’ and socially engaged in the way we look out for others...

Tribalism was ALL about ‘dog eat dog’ so the more developed we have become (through expansion... even violent expansion) the MORE we have grown to care for our fellow beings.

Deformed children aren’t left out to die anymore, and racial tolerance may still struggle with verbal degradation, but now rarely results in total deprivation (like slavery) or extermination (like WWII)!

Our survival as a species is (rightly) always above and beyond our need to preserve other species, especially when they are now species dependent on our ‘goodwill’ to survive anyway?

While we all espouse the excellent value of one man (person) giving up their own life to save another, very few people are actually willing to do that themselves, let alone for a completely different species.

We should all pray that future generations will be more environmentally and socially conscientious than we are, but we need to survive to give them the chance to become so enlightened anyway?

Interesting note on the payload. Apparently NASA was offered a free ride but turned it down. From the Daily Express:

NASA’s former deputy administrator says NASA turned down the chance to have their own payload on the Falcon heavy launch

Lori Garver says that SpaceX offered NASA the opportunity to get a free ride on the launch - but NASA refused the opportunity. The Air Force also turned down the offer.

She wrote: “I was told by a SpaceX VP at the launch that they offered free launches to NASA, Air Force etc. but got no takers.

“A student developed experiment or early tech demo could have led to even more new knowledge from the mission. The Tesla gimmick was the backup.”

On a different note, I notice how all the cut-and-paste media kept repeating that Space Oddity would be playing on a loop through the car radio. I don't really understand the point of the loop, since the car would have left the atmosphere by the time the song finished playing once, and sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, which would probably freeze or shatter the speaker diaphragm anyway, so Starman isn't likely to have been able to hear much. And while I'm thinking about it, what happened to the tyres? Did they explode or were they deflated before the launch?

Meh, I think I'll keep my dirty diesel and save myself the effort of recycling then.

No more complaining about the impact of farming, since it won't matter in a few years, we will just move somewhere else.
