I guess it takes all sorts, I dont think they are ugly.

We've had people for the last decade complaining EVs look too out there and why cant we have normal looking ones...

Plenty of other EVs if you want some other looks

I just don't get why Teslas (with the exception of the S) are all so ugly. I like the technology (though no HUD is a poor decision) and think the cars themselves are fantastic for the market, price and everything, but it would take so little to make them really nice and futuristic etc.

That's always going to be a subjective view point. What you find attractive, plenty of others will find ugly. That's why we have different car makers with different design styles.

I had ticked the “tell me when something is happening” for Model Y on the Tesla NZ website. But so far……(crickets). Hopefully some showing up in Oz is a good sign.

To me the Model Y is effectively a Model 3 stretched in the vertical axis (yes, I know it’s a hatchback). As far as looks go, I’m sitting in it, enjoying driving it, so what it’s like on the outside is of less consequence. But then I came from driving a ten year old Camry, so the same applied to that.

I will be interested to see how hard riding they are, as that seems to be what most overseas reviewers comment on. For “rich” families, a Y might be ideal.

Every European review has complained about the harsh ride. Which I think is the main issue..

Being able to cope with 1-7 passengers and tow 1600kg I think is pushing the quite basic suspension setup too far.

This article has mentioned that two of the cars spotted in Aus were RWD (Standard Range) models...so that seems to basically confirm that we're getting the cheap entry level model. Let's see if it will be able to squeeze in under the rebate limit...

The current RWD 3 is $75,243 OTR, I really doubt a RWD Y would be under $80k at the moment

I think it's unlikely too...but it depends how competitive Tesla wants to be with Kia and Hyundai. It would put a big gap between the Model Y and EV6/Ioniq 5 if they can't get it under.

Pre taxes in Hong Kong the RWD Y is $341.000 HK (The only other market that I think has it)

the base Model 3 is $315,000 that's an 8%  difference,

In NZ the base 3 list price is  $73 K, +8% is ~$79,  Drive away in NZ its $75K,  add 8% its $81K... so the $80K limit is in the ball park....

All this talk of it possibly not coming in under the $80k is somewhat depressing to someone who's been waiting months to put in an order!

If the entry-level model does end up priced over $80k I'm not sure if that's enough to put me off completely, given the lack of viable (and 'affordable') alternatives, but I think it would make me more likely to hold off.

Yeah, that hard ride is by far the biggest complaint in every review I've read/watched (the second would be those unhappy by the lack of a driver's screen or HUD/reliance on the screen for most controls), and so it does make me wonder if I should hold off ordering before getting the chance to take one for a test drive. If those MYs spotted in Aus are destined for test drives, it'll be interesting to see when/if any arrive in NZ for the same purpose - when is the next shipment of Teslas is due to arrive in NZ?

You can add a display pretty easily if you want, I've not found it an issue and a good view of the road is quite the compensation

Write to the Transport Minister (Wood) and ask him to apply the current inflation rate to the rebate limit. $86K would bring a few vehicles into the frame.

If Tesla keep the system running the same as for the Model 3, you pay an “order fee” of $400 (non refundable) and lock in a price. You can cancel any time up until you pay for delivery. So really you are betting $400 (Is it still that? I haven’t looked recently) that you will like the car.

As for the HUD. I bought an aftermarket one for my Model 3 from AliExpress that I am very happy with.

Yeah, taking a punt and wasting ~$400 isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and I'm likely to put my order when they open; in fact, I imagine if I bought one and ended up not liking it I wouldn't lose an enormous amount selling it on.

In regards to the HUD - I remember reading yours had stopped working with a software update; did you need to do anything to get it working again, or did another update sort this out? Also, how difficult was your model to install, and is it fully reversible? (Any chance you have the link to the same product? Would be particularly interested in a specific model that others have tested and are happy with.)
