2. During question time - they said (pardon if memory is wrong)  their aim is not to improve traffic flow - but unfortunately it may improve as the result of their roading changes to enable Mass Transit to remove choke points. This was in response to question if traffic improves  - why would people change to mass transit.
The also spoke about legislative changes for congestion charges and higher parking charges to force people to change.

Thank you for getting more information! I'm intrigued to know how mass transit heading south/east from the railway station will help people currently driving to/from the north.

In their non-polluting Teslas?

Geektastic: A bridge across the harbour from the bottom of the gorge to the airport please.

Have to be pretty tall to not block ships.

How about a tunnelled section in the middle, like all the other great mega bridge projects :)

The Fantasist in me would love to see a Golden Gate style bridge from Miramar to Eastborne.
It would create a second city access road and with a spur to Wainui,
would open the whole Wainui valley up for development

That would be impressive. You could then push the road around the South coast, creating a second access to the Wairarapa without going under or over the Remutakas...

Sure. Or have a lifting section. All things the Victorians managed!

The Bridge pylons could be made in the form of the Lord of the Rings statues of Islidur and Anarion

Dear lord imagine driving over the bridge in a classic southerly storm.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Maybe PJ could even partially pay for it with his new found wealth... :) -

Its a much better billionaire project than building spaceships or superyachts

This one would do the trick: Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, 2km central span, 70m height, high wind rating and high earthquake rating, 6 traffic lanes. Oh, no rail - LGWM would never allow that.

This would create horrible congestion. Eastbourne to Seaview is a very low volume road with no scope to make it better without destroying foreshore. A road to Wainuiomata would be hard given the rock make up of the hill, unstable rock prone to crumbling. A route around the southern coast to Wainuiomata would be through a fragile ecology and a coast prone to high seas and high winds. The eastern side of Te Whanganui a Tara is a non starter for an alternative route.

While in the real world outside the green party, most people give exactly zero farks about concreting some fragile ecology or foreshore if it means they get a better driving experience, I tend to agree that going around the coast isn't viable. I don't really see why you couldn't just cut a new road through to the valley thou.

So announcement today and some average punditry which is to be expected from stuff.

Wanted to make the comment here that it is really disappointing there will be no rail to the airport.

Also recently I have been in a few conversations where we have talked about NZ being focused on the efficiency of our infrastructure rather than resilience. Given our seismic geography two tunnels feels like the minimum for resilience purposes and yet the focus seems to be on supply induced demand.

A link to the Newshub story below.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2022/06/government-s-plan-for-wellington-transport-revealed-light-rail-extra-mount-victoria-tunnel.html

It's a grand idea, but i don't see it being much more than that.

If I remember the original proposal's correctly, 30 years was mentioned. The story above quote's a cost of $6.4 Billion, which is in Treasury's mind going to increase significantly.

So say it costs $10 Billion, who knows?

It also says Council's will pick up 40% of the cost, so $4 Billion.

Therefore $4 Billion over 30 years is somewhere in the region of $134 Million per year.

QV says as of 2021, there were 80,000 rateable properties for Wellington City Council.

Then $134 Million over 80,000 rateable properties is around an extra $1600 per rateable property, per year.

Sure, that above is a over simplified view of it, and the Newshub story talks of the 40% being split across Wellington councils, but are Hutt & Porirua ratepayers really going to contribute to this ?  Maybe, but that would be a big maybe.

Either way, it'll be a big cost for the people of Wellington to have to pay for.

There have all ready been large rates increases this year, now they want to increase them even more ?

Agree on the cost - I think maybe you could convince the other councils if the airport corridor improved the connection to the railway station. I think the economics at a local level is likely to be even worse as the light rail is only to Island Bay.

Something I think to factor in to the costing is the intensification that would come with this - so the number of rateable properties would go up if it was fed by better public transport etc.

Also the number of rateable properties seems low - do you know if it is an apartment or the apartment building that is the rateable unit (the number would maybe make more sense if it was only the building)?
