Why be a dick about this.

If local iwi dont want you in the area , turn around & go home.
They are trying to protect their extended families from covid .
You are just going for a holiday drive , and possibly bringing Ak's covid outbreak into their region .

A white attitude thats no better than the clowns who refuse to wear masks in Ak supermarkets/shops .

What a outrageous thing to say, how dare you! White people are not clown's(well maybe some...) the only clown's in town are people like you who make racist comments like this, I can't believe this is still in the thread and hasn't been removed, the mods(@freitasm) must believe its ok, I can't imagine the uproar it someone was to claim back attitudes are no better then a clown's.
This is the thing, we keep having these problems in our society all the time, because of this constant need to throw the race card around,my extended family live in awanui and we'll be visiting in the new year,no matter what! the conversation I've had with them is they don't even support what local Iwi are doing anyway, just a small number of hard core are doing the damage, these things just make it so much harder on those that live up north, so it's not like they even have widespread support.

That's an interesting perspective.  Personally, I'm a supporter of people obeying the law and I think it sets a dangerous precedent when we allow any group - police, military or just friendly locals - to step outside the law and establish their own processes and impose requirements on other people.

How about I set up a random checkpoint in my neighbourhood to breath-test drivers?  I have a valid need to protect my family from death on the road, so surely this is legitimate?  It's a more clear and immediate danger than COVID.  Or how about a check point to test vehicle exhaust gases and noise levels?  Where does it stop?

But are people stepping outside the law?  There are new laws specifcally covering this under COVID-19 Protection legislation.  Done correctly, these people are obeying the law, which you're a supporter of (as am I).

I guess if others go beyond the scope of the legislation and try to ilegally block roads, then the police can and will shut them down - as they have done previously.  I hope it dopesn't come to that.  Personally I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt, rather than assuming the worst about what they 'might' do.

Exactly - if they are doing it in line with the legislation, with Police on site, then I guess that is legit.  OTOH, if groups want to take unilateral action to cut off the BOI, then they should be shut down immediately.

One reason I prefer to go on holiday via boat!

I am not ok with racism and no mod here is OK with it either.

What is not on is having the team being accused of being ok with racism.

Geektastic: Wairarapa is a bit behind on the vaccination front. Maybe we should put a roadblock on SH2.

This is the second time you have come up with this.  Wairarapa was about the 5th DHB to pass the 90% mark and currently sits on 93% of the eligible population first dose and 84% second dose with only  2692 required to meet 90%.

I was at the Masterton Centre yesterday for my booster and the staff were saying they are staying steadily busy all day, every day.

That fits the definition of a bit behind in my view.

If you don't know about societal issues don't comment.

That's not how a discussion forum works.

If communities have low vax rates, the long-term solutions aren't roadblocks on public roadways without a police presence. It's lifting the vax rates in those communities.

Frankly this should have been resolved after the first lockdown and now we've ended up with this predictable situation again. No one has the right to just decide to close a public road without following a proper process.

Unless you're a cop, I'm not obliged to stop for you. The fact your community has low vax rates doesn't suddenly mean you get to deputize yourself.

What am I going to learn, that you approve of vigilantism provided you personally view the cause as noble and just?

Dude, you can have a principled stand all you want. You still have to obey laws.

The ideal outcome is the one we've got. There will be Iwi roadblocks, but they will be supported and monitored by police.

clearly you have no idea of the deep longstanding serious issues facing the tangata whenua of Northland and Eastcape and I suspect you don't care. These areas have extremely poor housing, rundown health services, low funded educations services, very few doctors, low employment etc etc etc. They have been marginalised, ignored by successive governments and the regions neglected. However the privileged believe they should be welcomed with open arms and yet abuse the hospitality. Like I said dig deeper and learn.

I don't have to 'learn' anything here, you seem to be the one that needs to learn that long-standing social inequality does not give you an extra-judicial right to close off a public road because you personally believe it's for 'the greater good'.

None of the things you list are easily solved, not within the next few weeks or probably even the next decade. So how long exactly should people put up with being stopped from moving around on public roads by members of the public with no authority to actually do so? That's the actual question here.
