BlakJak: That's a shocking attitude. I hope you get fined! Let me guess - your drivers license is expired because you couldn't be bothered filling out the form? You chose a vehicle that incurs RUC, arranging to be current is one of the overheads in doing so. I'm all for improvements in automation but blatant (clearly non-accidental) regulatory breaches out of laziness speaks to character.

Calm the moral panic farm.   There is no safety issue here.  It's a tax and I'll eventually have to pay it anyway.  When the govt owes me money, it takes its sweet time paying so ... gooses and ganders.  I've been caught twice by police with unpaid RUC and they just remind me to get it topped up.  Obviously not a big concern for them either. WCS they give me waiveable fine and I have to show I'm up to date in x days.

My drivers licence on the other hand is up to date (although at my age there is no test, so there's no safety issue either) and I get my eyesight checked annually.

But yeah I'm lazy.  That's why I work 60 - 70 hours per week.

Dingbatt:

Ah, but you are bringing common sense and logic into the equation. Not just ideology.

But additionally, since EVs by their very nature are heavier than their ICE equivalents, should they pay higher RUCs?

The push into EVs -> heavier vehicles -> more RUC revenue?

Every RUC liable Class 1 vehicle under 3.5 Tonnes pays the same rate, as far as I can tell.  Whether it's a 1,200kg diesel hatchback 3,400kg light commercial.

I've read in Min of Transport guff somewhere that they don;t have any evidence to suggest a 1 tonne vehicle cause less road wear than a 3 tonne vehicle.  Personally  I think that's just bureaucrat speak for "we're going to tax you more because we can".

Light trailers ride for free.  At least I hope so, my SUV and boat on trailer are over 3.5 tonnes.

And this is where it will end up. We are doing this because we can and it aligns with our ideology. If not blame it on Covid.
