Behodar:

Agreed. I've had minor panic attacks on rural roads at night when I see the reflectors on the back of a car (on the wrong side) and think I'm veering off to the left.

People have been killed due to cars parked illegally facing the wrong way at night with traffic attempting to pass on the "correct" side of that parked vehicle.

On angle parking, Note that while it is not common, NZ does have some (mandatory) reverse in angle carparks.

They look to still be facing the same direction as the traffic, being on the right hand side of a one way street.

Scott3:

And there is no shortage of parking here. Massive open air & multistory parking building just across the road.

That multistory parking building is almost always empty for a reason.

It is only open 6am-9am only on Mondays-Fridays and only if it is not a public holidays. Basically closed Sat/Sun/Holidays.

When it is open, the cost is $3/hr up to $8/hr. May seem cheap compared to Auckland CBD, but given the surrounding parks are almost all free -- it's not surprising no one uses the AT building.

To be honest I can't understand why AT simply makes the building 24/7 and makes it free after hours. Or make it free to train users. Or come up with a deal with Westfield to offer free parking to shoppers on weekends.

I've never once seen it >10% occupancy and I both work/live within 5mins drive of this building. Most cars i see there are AT/AC branded cars and almost nothing else. This indicates most users of the building are those who don't pay due to having a AT/AC work car. So it is basically a AT/AC building of 500+ parking spaces dedicated for the 5-10 staff cars based there.

For proof just see this Google Street view:

https://www.google.co.nz/maps/@-36.9907537,174.8773636,3a,58.8y,131.25h,97.3t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1stuRvfOkcc32vsD50vOoWyw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DtuRvfOkcc32vsD50vOoWyw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D131.24795478343003%26pitch%3D-7.299856885122097%26thumbfov%3D90!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205410&entry=ttu

You can easily see there is no cars at all parked anywhere in the upper floors. Only the lower floors have cars and they are ALL without exception AT/AC cars and only a handful of them.

And before you suggest I've cherry picked a bad time -- just view the history in Street View and you'll find similar images the year before, and the year before, and the year before. And I can confirm 100% it's like that any hour of the day, any day of the week, etc.

Such a waste of a perfectly good parking building. Doesn't excuse the bad parking I hasten to add but I would imagine if AT managed the mutistory parking with the goal of encoranging people to actually use it then I suspect a lot of the on street parking issues would go away... But we wouldn't want that would we!

Anyway, back to our scheduled programming on cars parked the wrong way...

Pretty sure that used to be a two way street, and when converted to one way it would have been easier to leave the parking as is and put up a sign.

MadEngineer:

For other parks I try to reverse in especially at supermarkets when I'm not collecting a full boot-load.

I always get a chuckle at supermarkets in the double car rows when people back into the park, then when someone parks behind them they can't get to or open the back of their car to load their groceries.

I am a fan of reversing where it's appropriate.  Some parks, particularly where the road/aisle is narrow, it is easier and quicker to back into.  I think it depends on the situation.  Drivers should have the skills to do both and the common sense to choose the most appropriate action in the circumstances.  I know, I know.... common sense isn't so common these days.

Personally, I think people have a social responsibility to report nuisance parking when they see it in their local neighbourhood. When councils start getting frequent complaints from particular areas then they might start being more proactive.

Yeah, I agree but it can be slow to get results, and those results can be mixed!

As an example: we had someone around the corner who constantly parked over the footpath, typically fully blocking it. This $%#$%s me off more than nearly every other parking violation as it’s so disrespectful to, and creates problems and risks for, pedestrians and others using the footpath - forcing them onto the road to get past. After regular reporting to the council I did seem to finally get somewhere - she now doesn’t park often on the footpath, but does almost always park on the side of the road facing the wrong way! I’ve chalked that up as a partial victory and moved on…

There’s a local FB page where people post up photos of dodgy vehicle related things and parking over footpaths is featured a lot. The comments however indicate a large number of people (or at least those that are vocal) can’t see an issue with it and think the photo of the car is the greater crime.

To answer the subject of this thread, I blame covid and the explosion of stupidity.

Something that hasn't been mentioned before is that if you reverse into a parking bay, it also is faster to leave in case of emergency. It's one movement out instead of two.

They usually drive thru from the empty one on the other side because they lack the confidence to be allowed to drive but for some reason still do. Saw one who drove forward and had the nose of the excessively large 4x4 out into the lane so they could open the tailgate to load stuff.

Just received a recall notice for my Mazda about this issue; they need to recalibrate the sensor.

Stu: Yes, see this far too often. Some people don't understand the issue.

kiwifidget:

My car has a fit every time I approach a car parked on my side of the road facing me.

It beeps really loud, and BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE flashes up on the HUD.

And it happens a lot on the road that leads to my road.

Very annoying.

Mazda? Mine is, and does the same.

No recall notices for mine, currently. Which model do you have, @rabba?
