Senecio: I’ve contemplated using share tank but I drive past a fuel station everyday that is on an average 15-20c per litre cheaper than any Z station within a 20km radius.

Yep, but could you lock that in going forward?  i.e. Would the price you could've got on Sharetank last week, still be dearer than at the station you drive by this week?  I guess in some locations that may still be true.

For me it was a clear win.  I loaded 95 gas into Sharetank at 2.519 (in Auckland).  Currently Gaspy shows lowest 95 petrol in Auckland at 2.717 (excl. Costco).  Even Costco is 2.647.

With the volatility in petrol prices lately it sounds like its a bit of a gamble having to lock in a price and pay for the fuel up front. Here in Aus I can lock in a price for a week at any 7eleven, if the fuel price goes down I simply dont use my locked in price.

It's a calculated gamble.  In NZ we had an overnight step change in petrol prices to the tune of up to 30 cents.  That means there would have to be a huge amount of downside price volatility to get back to below where I locked in.

Note, the comparative prices I quoted above are the lows across the whole Auckland region.  In my part of Auckland, Birkenhead, the prices are currently around $2.96. So that's 44 cents above where I locked in.  That's the beauty of Sharetank.  You can lock in at the Z low within a 30 km range, but fill up at your local station at the locked in price.

On 950 litres, 44c = $418.  So non-trivial.  Obviously there's a funding cost on the amount spent to pre-purchase, but it's way less than $400.

You also need to remember with sharetank you don't have to use the fuel, you can set the app to use your backup payment method if the average cost in your sharetank is greater than the current pump price.  This way you always get the best price on the day.

Yep, or you're free to go to a non-Z station, if they happened to be cheaper.

Not able to use share tank as it isn't compatible with the z business card but just looked into it out of interest. You can pre purchase up to 1000L. Makes an even bigger nonsense out of people stockpiling fuel at home in jerrycans when Z will store it for you!

Also, good luck with any insurance if you're holding more than 50L of petrol on your property without any permit or approved storage.

The fuel tank in my boat is close to 200L.  I keep it full .  I usually fuel up on the way home, so I'm ready to go whenever there is an opportunity.

I imagine many boat owners would have >50L of petrol in their boat at times.  A common set-up might be 2 x 22L tote tanks and a 22L 'Jerry can'.  One out, one home, and the third in reserve.  If they have an underfloor tank, it will be more like 100L.

mine is 40gal so a little smaller. I also keep it full to minimise the surface area for condensation to form. Never noticed any problem with stale fuel despite once not using the boat for a whole year.
