Most EVs will be not needing a WOF for a while. Mine will be dec 2028 that I need the first one, so I expect that will be the first they see of the odometer.

But if you go thru a breath test they usually want to see the odometer in a diesel, so probably the same with EV's after the end of may.

Oops, dec 2025. Got too excited there and added 3 to it twice.

Per the website, you are required to enter an accurate odometer reading when purchasing.

Others are correct. This means what the Odometer reading is when you purchase the RUC's.

---------------------
For those considering entering a different value:

Be aware RUC labels come with a Minimum and Maximum ODO value printed on them. If you get stopped before your WOF (Police will check ODO of every RUC vehicle they pull over for speeding etc.), and your ODO is less than the minimum value, it will be clear something is up.

RUC penalties are steep (A lot of the rules are set up to discourage cheating in the trucking industry where RUC's can be 10x higher than you will pay on your PHEV).

Road User Charges Act 2012 (15):

(2)
A person commits an offence in respect of an application made under subsection (1), if the person provides information that the person knows, or ought to have known, is incorrect in a material particular.
(3)
A person who commits an offence against subsection (2) is liable on conviction,—
(a)
in the case of an individual, to a fine not exceeding $15,000:
(b)
in the case of a body corporate, to a fine not exceeding $75,000.

Suspect for most people it is not worth risking a conviction and a $15,000 fine.

Why on earth not? They don't have any special exemption.

Yeah, nah.

There's a lot less sold new since 2022 (3 year WOF) than the combined total of new sold prior and total used.

Source.

Probably more accurate to say any new car won't need a WOF for a while.

It's the odometer reading at the time you buy the RUC.

So, that implies I'll save money by waiting till the end of May.

That seems to be the popular strategy. Just be aware that the system might struggle to perform which presents the risk of King's Birthday weekend without your RUC window card.

*Shrug* I mean, that's a risk you could take. But you'd have to think the cops will be out checking EVs starting tomorrow.

So yeah, nah. They are not going to be checking RUC for EVs tomorrow.

Having been through a checkpoint on the way home from work, the police officer checked my WOF, Rego and RUC in my model 3.

When asked what they do with EVs without RUC yet, he said we let them go but advise them to get one ASAP. At the moment they are allowed to check if you have one, but aren’t allowed to issue fines until 1 June.

RUC's were a legal requirement from 1 April, the 2 month grace period just prevents you being prosecuted. Come 1 June you could be liable for getting a ticket. NZTA will also send you an invoice for any unpaid distance. If you wait 3 years that bill could be quite high, not to mention risking some big fines.

whats the fine these days? the fine used to be the price of the ruc, plus having to pay the ruc.
