I think its idiotic because, although it was a few years ago, they did something similar in the UK with ordinary tax disks (or whatever they're called), not RUCs. The result was lots of fines for people who could no longer check whether they were up to date using the simple method of looking at the date on the paper in the windscreen. It also doesn't require an app or t'interweb to check, assuming its working the day you want to check it.

I was thinking about this very thing this morning. As a pedant, I regularly look at the “pieces of paper” in the windows of all the family cars. A little bit redundant in the case of WoF and Rego because I get email reminders (easy because they’re time based).

What would be good is if car manufacturers that have Apps associated with their cars would allow you to set mileage reminders in the App.

The Tesla API is beyond me but I’m sure someone could come up with an App to help with reminders.

Still don't see any good reason to get rid of them. Worked fine for decades...

Take the (approx) 4.6 million registered vehicles, multiply that by the number of stickers & lables each vehicle has, which is two at the very minimum (WOF + Rego).

That's a lot of labels that end up in landfill every time they have to be replaced...

So yea, that's one good reason for change.

All fair enough. But still disagree. I would like to think that old WOFs and things are (or should be) paper and are (or should be) recycled. Emails are fine to remind you to get your new WOF etc bit of paper.

Guess I'm just stuck in the if it ain't broke corner...

I consider having to carry a piece of paper around between my needless trip to the postbox, and next using the car that I have bought rego for, the constant waste of it, the hassle of attaching regos and WOFs to trailers to be a broken system.

Plus with the labels gone, perhaps they will revisit the 3 month minimums for putting regos on hold? That's always very annoying to decide if I should put on hold or not, and again despite paying for the rego, and getting the email confirmation that makes it OK to use the car, I still get a label delivered a week or so later.

Rego & RUC cards are a large portion plastic. (and get put in a plastic pocket on the windscreen, or stuck with a double sided plastic sticker to trailers & motorbikes)

WOF labels are paper, but one side is gets coated by a plastic sticker. On trailers & motorbikes they go in a little plastic holder

None of that stuff is going to be recycled.

Also reduce is better then recycle anyway.

And we can't really change to paper, need enough durability to stand up for a few years in a potentially wet environment.

Bung:

You can check the local government rating database with just an address. I see no reason why there should be any privacy issues showing whether a vehicle was current with wof and applicable fees through number plate lookup.

I can't be a privacy loss if the same information is currently displayed for all to see on the windscreen and you can lookup WOF and rego expiry online at nzta - just need the plate.

The only useful thing those window cards do is remind the driver about the expiry date.

Outlook. Google Calendar and many other office productivity tools have APIs.

Lets remind ourselves of the thread topic - and the problem with the $12 admin fee and people who will top up RUC frequently with small amounts. It is unaffordable.

Assuming the admin fee is significantly due to the overhead of printing those labels, sticking them in envelopes and delivering them to letterboxes... then yes, they are a dumb idea and we should get rid of them.

Funny admin fees for RUC have been in place for over 10 years yet I never heard diesel owners complain?

I have, which is probably  one reason why a lot have got rid of their diesel cars, and I don't think too many diesel cars are still sold. We used to have one but it wasn't worth it. IMO it should be built into the price. Imagine if you had to pay admin fees on normal transactions each time you paid for something. Technology should be making admin costs a lot cheaper anyway, especially when things are often now self service and automated. The fees are a legacy from when it wasn't as automated and pre internet.

You have not been listening to diesel owners in that case. The ones I know hate it and the ordering and tickets and stuff.

Diesel owners have a choice of owning a diesel and know how the charges work for making their decision. They probably buy a lot of kms in one purchase.

With RUC’s applying to all vehicles it will hit everybody and not everybody can afford to bulk buy the kms reducing the average admin fee paid per km.

I'd like to know how automated the process inside NZTA is, whether the label goes from being printed to envelope to post via automation or how much of the process involves human work

You could also say EV and PHEV owners also have a choice of owning a vehicle and always knew RUC would have to be paid.

Not funny if you think i through.

Most diesel owners top up RUC in large amounts infrequently so the $12 is neither here nor there. I usually get either 5000 or 10000km at $76/1000km so I don't care about $12 against a $380 or $760 fee. The issue is people with no money who will top up their tank with $20. If they top up their RUC at the same time say 200km that the tank is good for they pay $15 for the actual RUC mileage and $12 for the admin fee. Massive punishment for purchasing in small lots. No way around it with the windscreen labels.
