Yep, I saw the story and wondered two things

1 - why is this a story at all - pretty obvious if you are using public chargers they will cost (especially if your vehicle charges very slow)

2 - Why isn't he charging at work? I think that car has a 9kWh battery - that'd be about $2 to charge daily?

He summed it up in one line

"It just seems that I'm being disadvantaged because I've decided to buy a car like this that doesn't do fast charging"

Ding ding ding.... I  think he has got it surrounded, you are being made responsible for your decision.... pretty much case closed..

HarmLessSolutions: According to Plugshare there's also 2 chargers in Kihikihi and 4 in Te Awamutu but none of those have AC capability.

But that's a 5 hour walk and he works in Otorohanga so not very useful.

Exactly, it's totally the wrong vehicle for the use case. It's a city commuter vehicle, not a rural one. You don't buy a Honda Civic and expect to tow a tandem caravan, and a PHEV with 25km battery range isn't the right vehicle for a regular 100km commute.

In the end this is why I went for a BEV. My regular commute is 70km with no ability to charge at work. The PHEV I was looking at was rated at 50km, so 40km actual range and was only $1000 cheaper than the BEV after the rebate. There’s only been a couple of occasions in over a year where continuing on petrol would have been less hassle, but a bit of planning got around that. If I was doing a lot of longer trips on a regular basis, particularly to areas less well served by chargers, a PHEV may be easier to live with.

The chap on Fairgo could have bought one of the new Mercedes C350e (PHEV) which has a 25kWh battery and an electric range of 100km if his main objective was “to save the planet” (he mentioned it several times). $112000 though.

I'm just thinking the boss might complain if he's 5 hours late to work each day, then leaves after a couple of minutes to start the trek back to the car.

In New Zealand Tesla Supercharger news, they're going on a bit of a spree at the moment with new sites being planned for Paraparaumu, Bulls, New Plymouth and Rotorua. Construction has already started on all of these except Bulls (which was announced today).

Hopefully some will be popping up for the South Island soon - Dunedin really is overdue at this point!

Bulls is nice. Mangaweka is juuuuust a touch too far from Hamilton for a RWD unless you want to granny it the whole way.

Having driven SH3 in out Model 3 recently I scratch my head as to why you would put a Supercharger site in New Plymouth?

It’s the largest population centre, but doesn’t that just make it more likely that people will charge at home? And isn’t it the centre of EV hate in the region (council)?

I would have thought a better spot would be Waitara or Inglewood rather than going into New Plymouth if you are travelling on SH3 to get somewhere. After all the reason for fast chargers is to link highway driving.

The worst Supercharger site (imo) that we used was in Palmerston North. Tucked in the corner of a mall car park, hard to find and really busy. The upside was it was beside a mall, so there was at least food and toilets.

If the SCs to go into Bulls are put where the existing chargers are, that would be good. The site has easy access with facilities close.

On a different topic I’m getting tired of the uneducated comments about “EVs getting a free ride with RUCs”. The fees are coming and as was pointed out by an Aussie commentator, the GST paid on a $30000 battery is quite a lot of tax that a ICE owner hasn’t paid. Now that public chargers are essentially costing 80c/kWh if RUC is set too high it will be cheaper to take an ICE on a road trip. Anecdotally, I understand 80c is used because that is the same cost per km as a Toyota Corolla. So I’d be better off using the Corolla once RUCs are added for EVs.

I recently did about 3000 km in the north island over 13 days in a hired Polstar 2 LR. Almost all charging was done via ChargeNet chargers, as charging at most of the accommodation I was staying at was not practical. The cost of the electricity I used for that trip was factionally high than the equivalent cost in diesel would have been if I had used my Mitsubishi ASX. And that's when diesel was still over $2.10 a litre. Add in the RUC for my diesel then using the Polestar comes out on top.

Just an aside.
During my trip I passed through Whanganui twice about 4 days apart and both times both ChargeNet chargers were in use with someone already waiting.
Charger at New Plymouth was out of action for 2 days, had to go to Ōpunake for a charge.
Finding a convenient charger in Wellington that was not in use, to top the car off before returning it was a bit of a pain

Thanks for sharing your experience @djtOtago

It is a 65KM trip from New Plymouth to Ōpunake so you would need a fair bit left in the reserve. How much spare range did you allow for during the 3000KM trip before needing a recharge to avoid any faulty charger issues like in New Plymouth's case?

Do whatever you want to do man.

The coming Tesla SC installation in New Plymouth is at the Novatel Hotel on the main arterial road into town from the north. I guess that with the Council turning down Tesla's request for use of spaces in one of the Council owned carparks the opportunity has been seized upon by a commercial provider. Also I have been told by a solar installer that there is a serious shortfall in grid infrastructure in the NP CBD which was not only responsible for the ChargeNet owned facility to fail recently but also is preventing the NPDC from installing anything more than level 2 chargers at its own property for charging of the fleet of EVs it is in the process of purchasing. This infrastructure may also have contributed to the Council resisting development of more DC chargers in the New Plymouth area.

Incidentally both Waitara and Inglewood are within the NPDC territory so still under NPDC's control and planning.

I think a Supercharger in each city is a good idea, since people do travel to these cities. The council have been dicks about having the Supercharger site on council land, but it seems Tesla has partnered with Novotel for this. They also need somewhere that can supply the 750kW that the site will need.

My point as more about having the SCs on the route most people would take travelling on the western side of the island than the internal politics of the council. At least the Novotel is on the correct side of town to divert to and then be on your way. It looks like it’s about 3 blocks from the shops.

As I pointed out, once it’s just as expensive to do roadie in an EV than it is in an ICE (particularly a hybrid) it will be even more difficult a sell, so it has to be more convenient (and reliable) than it is at the moment.

I hadn't heard about any of these, but it's great to see; Bulls will be well-stocked given the recent opening of a ChargeNet hypercharger there.

I was interested to find out where the Paraparaumu charger was, given that's the one I'm most likely to use; looks to be in the Coastlands carpark, between Countdown and Pak 'n' Save. I'd kinda been hoping for one closer to the on/off ramps to the expressway (ie, Kapiti Road), so this placement means the J'ville Superchargers are probably more convenient for easy access on and off the motorway.
