I see reports that Chinese EV sales have tanked in Europe after starting off with a hiss and a roar.

I wonder if that is because it has taken the established brands a bit longer to get their offerings to market, so people were more willing to take a risk on the new Chinese Brands?

BYD and MG haven't earned themselves this premium pricing and are getting ahead of themselves.

You are kidding yourself if you think they are charging premium prices.  This is just the price of new EVs.  If we take a more nuanced look at whats happened we may come to different conclusions.  The NZD tanked against the USD last year and BYD put prices up in December.  Tesla has had its market dominance eaten alive by BYD in China, and is starting to see that in other markets, so they have dropped their prices.  This brings the two brands closer, but still apart in price.

Model 3 - 66,400
Atto 3 Extended - 59,990
MG ZS Long Range - 64,990

If you want a Tesla never been a better time to buy one, but equally the Atto 3 offers specs you miss out on with a model 3 like shade from the glass, V2L, 360degree camera, bigger storage, and slightly roomier (think kid friendly)🤷‍♂️.

Interesting that Mitsi are looking at an electric Kei car for NZ...

Basically its a modern iMiev

"In a bid to expand its electric offerings, Mitsubishi is considering introducing the awesome little eK X electric car to New Zealand. But before it does, it wants your opinion."

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/132317339/mitsubishi-considering-selling-tiny-3metre-long-electric-car-in-nz

its got a few downsides thou, the biggest being a 20Kwh Battery limiting its range to 180km, and its unlikely to get a 5 star safety rating,

On the Plus side it could be cheap, really cheap... like sub 40K cheap  (even without the discount)

VW ID 5 now under the $80k mark too https://www.volkswagen.co.nz/en/new-cars/id5.html

Making some good competition against the Teslas with higher range too.

One downside to the VW/Skoda options is that I don't believe VW have brought the online connectivity to NZ...so there's no companion apps available here if that's something you value.

The new BYD Seal looks pretty good.

Most cheap EVs including Telsas look cheap and feel soulless. This is somewhat better inside and out.

Agree. The issue prior to now was lack of choice. While that has been slowly but steadily improving, its spiked upwards now. Yes, its Chinese, but many cars are made there including Euro brands.

I had a quick look. More than I expected from a Kei. Seven airbags and numerous other safety features. Five Star JNCAP rating:

If all you're doing is chugging around Grey Lynn or Parnell and other city suburbs with narrow streets and limited parking it will be hard to ignore and a lot more fun than ice.

I see that Subaru are now taking registrations of interest for the Solterra, for delivery later this year. If this is still going to be under $80k for AWD, I think it will shake things up a bit.

The Solterra and bz4x are good EVs...if the year was 2016. They absolutely are not worth the money Subaru and Toyota are trying to sell them for.

Teslas have always had a not-quite-last-gen Mondeo look about them. The Model 3 looks pretty good but the Y looks a bit chonky and the S looks a bit overweight now.

Take me back to the 1990s when Toyota sold a Camry that looked like a sedan, a Rav 4 that looked like a Barbie toy and a Celica that looks like someone on acid was allowed to design a rally car. Variety is the spice of life.

The Solterra will be good value if it comes in under the $80k mark as I don't believe there are any other AWD options under that mark.

If I ever win the Lotto - which would involve entering Lotto - I will buy a 1999 Impreza WRX STi and convert it to electric, but leaving in the manual transmission. Most of the time it will sit in 4th and be otherwise ignored, but occasionally it will be fun to use. ANYWAY - the 1990s Imprezas were GOAT and that's why my first real real car was a 1999 Impreza. Thankyou for attending my TED talk.

I found this interesting. The Aussie's certainly spent a lot of money on "EV FireSafe".

Considering the Australian government gave $10.3 billion to prop up fossil fuels, it may be considered FUD, Fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

Car Expert: EV battery fires rare, but on Australian Government's agenda

The Australian Government’s recently published National Electric Vehicle Strategy focuses on big-ticket issues like increasing EV supply and fleet uptake, while plugging charging infrastructure gaps.

But other issues are covered as well, based on hundreds of submissions from companies and research bodies: for example the risk of an EV-related fire involving lithium-ion batteries.

The government subsequently floated a plan to fund “world-leading guidance, EV road rescue demonstrations, and fire safety training to address safety and risk knowledge gaps around EVs, chargers and battery technology”.

While rare, spectacular footage of EV battery fires and recalls of popular EVs due to fire risks such as this one and this one have captured public attention and led to misconceptions about how common they are.

EV battery fires rare, but on Australian Government's agenda

The issue of EV fires (thermal runaway events) has also caused concern for the United Firefighters Union of Australia, and led Melbourne-based charging provider JET Charge to call for national standards addressing fire safety requirements in the built environment,

One Australian company deeply involved in this space is EV FireSafe, which keeps a database of verifiable worldwide passenger EV battery fires and tracks emergency response methods that work.

The company draws funding from the Australian Department of Defence, and has been referenced by the Australian Fire Agencies Council, Fire Protection Research Foundation (US), and the National Fire Chief’s Council (UK).

Why?  Just the battery size and charge rate?  They look otherwise good on paper provided they can stop the wheels falling off

My view is that they have a USP - AWD - which is otherwise not available in an EV without spending silly money.  I guess they might find a price point below retail as is happening with "ex-demo" examples of Mazda's joke BEV
