cshwone:

And new cars don't have a WOF until year 3.

No real issue, they still have to buy RUC as they use mileage. I'd wager that new car buyers would have little desire or lack of morals to get a 3 year free ride, then have a 3 year bill

Rego. Mileage declaration can go on there, online checks if its up to date, if not, no rego

Traffic cops can also check RUC if they happen pull a car over

Lots of easy solutions, its just different

New diesel vehicles currently don't require a WoF until year 3 either, and yet they are subject to RUC. I'm not seeing what the issue is?

Everyone paying RUC would probably be the fairest, but man, there needs to be a more elegant solution. Imagine paying it at WOF time, it would like be paying your power bill annually.

My partner had a diesel car for awhile, and it seemed she was always having to top up RUCS. And I drive a petrol car 40-50,000kms per year, I'd need a direct debit each week!

As @harmlesssolutions said above, the money's on electronic monitoring with tags/GPS transponders or something like that in the long run. Obviously it can't be rolled out to 5M vehicles on day 1 but it's the only sensible solution.

It would need to capture weight information somehow - one of the biggest injustices in the current system is a Mini pays the same road tax as a petrol driven ute that takes up twice the size and can be literally twice the weight. One is going to cause a lot road wear than the other.

Not quite. Mini uses probably half the petrol as the ute, so pays half the RUC per km. Weighs about half, so near enough. Ironically the injustice would be if RUC applied to the mini and the ute as the Mini causes less wear but pays the same per km RUC

Here is one US solution in  few states now

https://fortune.com/2023/06/27/gas-tax-revenues-shrinking-fuel-efficiency-evs-states-tracking-road-usage/

The data could be sent back to the transport authority who would then change mileage based on distance travelled and car type.

Aren't you currently paying road tax at least once a week? How would you be any worse off if you were making a direct debit each week for the kms a GPS device was showing you had driven?

For those that want to pay less tax: Buy an e-bike and drive less. An e-bike will contribute near zero wear & tear on the roads, so it is fair enough that they don't have to pay a RUC. If it takes over 1 tonne of vehicle to transport one human being then there definitely SHOULD be a cost to that.

We already have a RUC system for the diesel trucks and cars out there, no need to reinvent the wheel with GPS etc. Enhance it down the track? Sure

Yeah I can't see mandatory GPS tags on day 1, but they'll come down the line for sure.

Tesla's NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging connector and system is taking over the world - well, North America anyway

Volvo has announced that it is joining Ford, GM & Rivian in adopting NACS:

Stellantis, the last mostly-American car manufacturer is trying to leap onto the bandwagon:

Stellantis aka Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, who also own Alfa Romeo (incl. Abarth), Citroën, Dodge, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot & Vauxhall brands

And, just to put a cherry on top:

This will wind up the tinfoil hat/EVs are bombs brigade:

Kiwi Jaguar EV owners told to park cars outside due to fire risk

A quick search revealed that they seem to use the same LG-chem that the Chevy Bolt used.

The article also mentions a petrol Jag that is being recalled due to some possible failure that could result in fire - no one will be bothered about that....

Oh I'm not worried about the cost. I like that it's in petrol and I don't have to think about it. As I mentioned with RUCS and diesel I'd just set up a direct debit each month to make sure it covered the 40-50,000km.
But short of the E-road it's not very elegant and you can see people getting way behind.

Just like rego and wof, there are always going to be those that are behind on them, but thankfully unlike wof you dont have to queue up for most of your saturday morning for some little authoritarian complex suffering person to decide what you are going to fail on.

At my VTNZ they are quite good, friendly and helpful. But their KPI appears to be based on a Tortoise activity ratio
