Generally I use whatever station is closest to wherever I am at the time I need fuel. Having said that, given a choice I would now probably use Z if I had the choice between a few because paying at the pump is most convenient.

Also, when I'm on my bike I tend to avoid Mobil because I've heard bad things about the ethanol in their fuel, and the stupid fitting on the air machine at the local station is nigh on impossible to get onto the valve on my bike's wheels.

I remember in past Geekzone events that Sbiddle religiously chooses BP ;)

Z for two reasons.
1. Flybuys
2. Self sevice pumps
I think its pretty cool they offer this service considering they make stuff all off the petrol compared to the items instore.

hio77: find it a complete nuisance when i have to go to the cashier, tell them that im filling up for them to actually allow it

If I get to the pump and it doesn't work because I have to ask someone to "authorise it" I just put it back and go find other place. "Ain't Nobody Got Time for That"

Many places now have signs that say, if asked, you must go see the attendant.

This allows the attendant to use their discretion.

Profiling is used.

I am a middle-aged, clean-shaven white guy with clean clothes on and I drive a small, clean car.
I am never asked to pre-pay even if the pump has the pre-pay sign on it.

But if a (two or more of the following) young / Maori / dirty / hairy person in a boy-racer / dirty / old car pulls in, they are usually directed to pre-pay unless the attendant knows them.

I've had this happen SO many times at all petrol brands....and sometimes they have an argument with the attendant as I have obviously not been asked to prepay.

if your looking dodgy, sure..

but some places are just so edgy about it!

back when i was in school, ild often after school pop over to the challenge in Massey, the normal guy there knew me pretty well, and would always turn the pump on straight away.

there was a second guy that started up, and he didnt like the look of me. was generally a 50/50 on if ild simply go and have a chat with him, or if the other guy was also around held simply tell him im fine.

being massey, at like 330ish when the hoards are out, I accepted them being slightly edgy about it.

if i popped in early morning, it was not an issue at all.

no point in arguing with the guys about it though.. just still to going to the same station, and not have to deal with it.

On the other hand, other day I stopped at my Z station, filled the tank (over $100) and when I got to the cashier... No wallet.

I told the attendant I would be back in five minutes (I do live five minutes from the station) so he made me sign the papers for these cases, but didn't put in the book. Apparently you have up to 24 (or 48? Can't remember) hours to come back and pay - I was back in ten minutes and didn't have to worry about "the book"...

BP because Race Car needs 98 and is not recommended to run anything Ethanol blended.
Plus I don't like the reduction in economy from the ethanol blends.
Motorsport NZ conducted some bench dyno testing and found that using E85 race fuel it took 50% more fuel to make the same power.  Hardly greener when it uses so much more of it.

And because 98 is significantly more expensive than 95, the daily driver also gets fueled up at BP on 91 and the AA discount accumulated for use in race car.  :-)

Yeah, it was a close thing in 2008 when it looked like all fuel would have to contain some bio-fuels. As far as I am aware it is only Gull and Mobil who use ethanol diluted fuels at the moment, and they are meant to be labelled.

I use Shell now called Z. Always have and probably always will as creature of habit.  Used Shell since 1971 when I started by apprenticeship as BMC mechanic. We had Shell pumps then when moved from Hamilton to Tauranga we had shell at the workshop there as well so just carried on using it all these years

Item:

Fair enough - I guess I still think of them as Shell...

I imagine the bulk of their crude and refined petrol still comes from Shell? I know trying to climb atop moral high ground as far as petrol is concerned is a hiding to nothing, but I still like to try and convince myself that I am scratching some kind of ethical itch by avoiding the more obviously ugly Oil companies!

(...I imagine that the Gull petrol still ultimately comes from one of the big players anyway, but still...)

Gull?  The company owned by Puma Energy, which is owned by Trafigura Beheer, which dumped toxic waste in Cote d'Ivoire so they didn't have to pay €1000 per cubic metre to dispose of it properly?  AND which probably gets its oil from one of those big oil companies you dislike?

I would revise that moral high ground you sit on there - it's looking a bit shaky ;)

BP as they sell 98.
Except my local one, so the nearest fuel station I use is about 20KM away :(

I use BP only as my car is tuned for 98.

It helps with my 4c a litre from AA and usually there is an extra something as I shop at repco a lot and wait for their 30c a litre weekend and buy some oil. Doing 6-800km a week service intervals come up quite quickly and being a big V8 it takes a lot of oil!
