hmmm.. i understand that it is good for traffic camera.

but this vehicle purposely park there EVERYDAY after the Patiki Road Offramp. which include zapping pictures during the busy travel time from 7am onwards. What is the point of putting it there when everybody is driving like 50km/h each morning. Focus on other areas too, not just only the motorway that they can get pictures on.....

Use your equipment/resource wisely, There are plenty of people speeding on the inner roads too....

SirHumphreyAppleby:
The new speed cameras also have an IR flash. The absence of any visible flash denies those of us with dash cams and other GPS data the ability to archive evidence in case a ticket arrives. I have on multiple occasions been 'flashed' due to drivers in adjacent cars speeding, and simply keep the relevant video (usually with the other speeding vehicle in the video, showing they are going faster). The police can claim all they like that their systems can correctly identify vehicles in lanes, but I do not trust them to get it right.

I thought I was imagining something. I've driven by quite a few and have seen IR bulb flash.
They must be taking pictures of every car that passes. - edit: I should read the whole thread before commenting.

If you are looking towards the light source you will see some light. Even if the flash were behind you, on a typical day, the old flash would light up the surroundings enough to be noticed.

when i was a student the cop cameras don't use flash in the day time (camera hidden inside close van), and at night they have a camry wagon with the boot open and a giant flash.

is this new?

gmball: Most drivers who get ticketed from a camera van probably have no idea until the ticket arrives in the post, no reason to slow down on the day they were ticketed, and for those who can afford it, having no demerit points probably means they have no reason to slow down in the future either.

The police will not accept GPS readings as evidence of speed.

You would think the police would know what the word evidence means.

I am specifically referring to video, which in my case includes GPS overlays. That is not the same as GPS data alone, which can be edited. I'm sure my camera stores months of GPS data, but only hours of video, and it's the video which I specifically want to preserve when flashed.

At the end of the day, whether they are willing to accept GPS data as proof or not is irrelevant. If you believe they are wrong, let the courts sort it out.

Your point is irrelevant.  It is not because of the manipulation of the GPS data that they deem it to be inadmissible to them, it is the use of consumer GPS devices to provide accurate speed data in the first place.  I personally disagree with their point of view.  Especially based in NZ where high-rise buildings aren't tall enough to significantly restrict satellite connectivity.

If you want to fight that sort of thing in the courts then good luck :)

personally I set the cruise control to the speedo at 98 and 49 (if needed) and relax. The difference in travel time between say 98kph or 105kph is minimal and not worth the worry.

It's not the speed that annoys me it is people trying to overtake or cut in front of me.

This especially annoys me if I have crawled along in the correct lane just for some a#$&*le to cut in front of me from a faster travelling lane.  Why can't they just wait in the correct lane like everyone else.  Some peoples sense of entitlement frustrates me.

Its basically impossible to use cruise control on Auckland motorways unless your driving between the hours of 1am-5am.

joker97: Or have adaptive cruise control

Got this on the new work cars. Freaky!!! Hard to relinquish control and trust to a computer. I must say though it does have the potential to change the way we all drive. Imagine all cars fitted with it.

when I was young I scoffed at Auto cars - nothing but manual.

But nowadays I scoff at self drive cars - but I can see how convenient it is for a metropolitan driver to have adaptive cruise control, lane keeping adjustment, 360 degree anti collision auto braking. still scoff at self drive cars though. what's the point of having a driver's licence then.

Anyway, I think full airbags and electronic stability control are keepers

Dratsab: A few questions for the compost you've posted:
1. What do you mean by GZ culture?
2. Do you expect to be taken seriously by holding up Stuff and NZ Herald as reliable sources of information?
3. Can you provide links to where scuwp ruminates on the short-sighted views to which you refer?

Aww lists, it must be Xmas time
