Reason #1 is to protect yourself.

Camera has to have at least two lenses - pointing forward and pointing at driver/passenger (e.g. your line of defence: "...you were not talking over the phone, not smoking, not doing make-up, not shaving while driving, not holding big mac with both hands, not poking in the nose and "checking the discovered treasures", not riding on the other side of the road near Suzuki selearship on the Gt South Rd, not listening to the load music or doing equally similar stupid things which could've distracted you from not paying attention to the road. Instead.... you were wearing seat belt, you were looking at the road, when required - into the mirrors and not at the passenger etc")
Seems like a joke? No - I see it every day happening while driving ONLY 10 minutes to work.

Why is this happening? Do not know. According to Stats New Zealand (referred to by NZ Radio) - 1 out of every 10 people in New Zealand has some sort of mental disability.
Suppose could be contributive factor to the irrational behaviour on/off the road....

Situation #1 Police officer fined the driver in Auckland for alledgedly not wearing seat belt when in fact driver was wearing it. Driver did not have camera at that time being so naive to beleive in "good nature of people". After that situation - purchased 3 cameras - now in every family car.

Situation #2 Piha Road, two weeks ago, heading back home from the beach. Approaching us from out of the closed corner - on the other side of the road - cyclist - riding in the middle of the road holding up few cars behind him. To overtake them there is no room. White car is taking chances and overtaking completely on the opposite side of the road. That is on the dead corner with no visibility within 20 meters. Those two - driver of the white car and cyclist were lucky that I have tured swiftly into the road pocket to avoid collision.
Camera captured all of that ..... .near miss

Situation #3 Seagull bumps into windshield on a motorway at our speed around 80K just after the bridge - causing momentarily distraction as it took us by surprise. Nothing happened - seagull disappeared in the blue sky. We were only able to identify the bird after watching video frame by frame - there were only few frames capturing the "bump" But if during that accident I would kick somebody from behind on the motorway - without footage - would court beleive the story of misterious seagull who hit my car and caused an incident?

P.S. This morning it was lady in honda integra making her hair with both hands and talking to the kid on the passenger seat and not looking forward.. while driving at the same time...They call it multitasking... I call it differently....

I have had a couple of cameras, and I don't have them for protection. I have them because I want footage if I see something cool.

I was interesting in getting one after the seeing the Russian meteor and a Plane crash on youtube, then trying to relate an incident on the AK motorway that no-one else seemed to 'get' when I told the story. (a bloody great piece of plywood got ripped off the side of a trailer in front of me, and I had to do some neat driving to avoid it). The thing that drove me to go get one though was when that roadworker got shot, and the police were looking for any dashcam footage to track where the guy went.

So far I've only download footage of a mother duck deciding to cross the road at a very bad time (hard breaking and a little dodge was enough to keep her ducklings safe) and When someone created a near miss in front of me (a ute turned across the path of a van doing 60 intersection as the van entered the intersection.) Both vehicles were sign written, so I sent the footage to the van owner, and the company that owned the Ute. I don't think they company that owned the ute took it very seriously, but the van owner was grateful.

Yes, And not really. Because if inattention doing any of these things results in an accident (when the general flow is same direction and right of way unless at an intersection where your attention is meant to be a lot more.. intense)

it seems a lot more likely you are going to be the one instantly at fault anyway. As most those end in failure to stop short, or t-bone etc etc.. and proving you were actually paying attention and in the clear, would likely take a lot of convincing otherwise. I'd say the number of accidents where the camera owner was not cause (if following the recommendations, bar equipment failure etc) but their actions needed to be referenced to prove so would be quite low in comparison.

I got one like others for the hell of it, Been rear ended 4 times *sigh* and do a lot of driving in my daily so able to catch a lot of retardation. So far been unlucky and had the memory card out/turned off when I have had the best ones though - a nutter drive down the wrong way at me in a multilane road at speed with roadcones stuck under it evading police.

Great pleasure in pinging marked vehicles/company cars when they are doing crazy things forgetting they are easily identifiable. Most companies require you to represent their branding lawfully, but seems not seeing the signwriting all over the tin box you are riding in means you can get away with it.. wrrrooonnnggg

I got mine (DVR-207) from An ebay seller Estore009 who sells the better chinese made ones. Has a massive range.

Got Via dashcamtalk.com review links. Was meant to be a replacement for the DVR-027, but turned out worse after the reviews started flowing in :(

G1W is the current way to go. But expect to pay a premium for GPS/own speed enabled units.

As I've always said, beware the 1-day cameras. Look the same, copies of the copies. Giveaway is the resolution not being a true HD ratio, and saving as Mjpeg encoding/MP4 and not the better MOV/H.264

My initial camera was 720p. That was all I figured I needed, and going to higher res was just more load on the memory for little good reason. But 720p wasn't good enough to pull the license plate of the Ute that pulled across in front of me at the far side of the intersection. So I upgraded to a 1080p one. I've yet to pull footage off in a similar scenario.

I bought it through Amazon (shipped with Youshop), with extended warranty. Gave me better protection than what I was told I was gonna get from the "NZ importer".

Blackvue DR650GW-2CH bundled with Power Magic Pro (the Power Magic allows you to run it in parking mode and cuts off after a set time or when the battery voltage gets below 12V og 11.8V).
