yes i like the swift. does your wife have the 1.3 or 1.5? i thought a 1.3 auto might not be enough grunt.

we really like the i30 but way out of our price range.

Yes all things break eventually, but the risk is higher with these, but hey that's life.

Over time they will get more reliable. Remember manuals have been around for a while. THen Autos. So they get bits that break, analyse, then improve. Over time, CVTs and DSGs could potentially become bullet proof.

[Eg the Audi RS6 isn't able to take a DSG, they put an old fashioned Auto in it, but in a few years they will use a DSG, then it will break, then they improve it, etc]

I think we're at the point where CVTs and DSGs for the latest model cars should be ok. But then when you buy latest model it's likely whoever you sell the car to is the one that deals with the issues. But I take it you're buying earlier models with earlier versions of these things

with the demio, thats the mazda 2, why is it so hard to find a mazda 2 or 3 for that matter, I know the market is flooded with imports but looking on trademe it feels impossible to find one.

the only budget demios are the gen 2 model, pre 2007, it was quite an ugly shape, vs the swift which is quite a bit more modern looking.

I don't believe Mazda use or have ever used CVT gear boxes (one of the reasons why I like their cars!).

Agree re the previous models of the 2/Demio are ugly; up there with Daihatsu Sirions in being best left to older people!
