Goosey:

RUC needs to stay as is, abeit could possibly be more user friendly.

Reason:  Diesel is used for more applications than just automobiles.

Leaving RUC's the way they are long term isn't really an option. When we decide to end the plug in car exemption, without RUC changes, a Nissan leaf or similar electric vehicle will be paying triple the road tax of a Prius. This not logical, and creates an incentive against electric cars (of which we have a government policy to increase the numbers of...)

Regarding your reasoning, Petrol is also used for more than just automobiles. The magnitude does vary, but off road petrol use is far from negliable. MBIE put off road diesel use at 40%. They estimated petrol off road use at 7%, but report notes the inaccuracy of this number as a weakness of there report.

It's a simple fix. All vehicles driven on the road should pay RUCs and petrol tax should be done away with... It's a much fairer system.

Scrapping RUC would also be more of an incentive to cheat the NOx emissions from your diesel vehicle. As cheating on NOx lowers your fuel consumption (which also means lower carbon emissions as well).

Services stations just over the border will do well out of a regional fuel tax.

unlikely as the distance most people will have to travel will offset the saving of the fuel tax. so you will end up paying more for the false economy.

if you live close to the border it may work in your favour but for people in auckland its self unlikely

Agreed. three cents / litre for a 35L vehicle amounts to barely a dollar....which would be about about 45% of a litre.....or about 4-5km on a flat road with no wind (rough average of smaller and larger vehicles). Maybe it would matter for a PHEV that can roll down and back on EV power...then use the petrol elsewhere. But then why take half an hour to save $1? Waste of time.

Not worth it.

I do that right now. I only really use petrol on long trips so normally fill up south of Hamilton. The battery covers virtually all my daily commutes and weekend usage.

I’d never do a trip specifically for topping up though... but with the pending taxes, will make a point of optimising where I fill up.
