On the same lines as all of this, I was curious if anyone had done any testing to see if there cars had any better fuel economy on premium fuel, and whether it justified the cost?

It's sometimes worth it. Details in the video :-)

Basically the higher tuned your car the more likely high octane helps power and efficiency.

ok - what the OP was asking about was mileage ... anyone?? coz i'm keen too ... ALTHOUGH i would think the cost would offset any mileage gains ... then the final question - premium fuels keep your engine cleaner - true/false?? (hint: i don't think anyone has the answer!)

Not scientific, but years ago when I tested this on rural driving, I found that the car went further on a tank when using Premium, and it drove nicer.

Against that, I have read that octane makes NO difference to power or economy, it just has a lower flash point so it runs cooler. But my experience is that it feels nicer, goes further, and costs more, so makes little difference in cost. It may be that the cars I tried that on were not optimised for lower octane.

I will try this on my bike (Suzuki GSX 650F) as I use that daily so I will feel a change. That is designed for 87+ which I think is 91+ in NZ, although I use 96
