everettpsycho: The biggest issues I see with the RUC I'm April 2024 applying to everyone is the messaging to all drivers that you need to start paying for your KMs. They will need to also take every car in the countries odometer to know what to charge them, which just isn't practical.

With both those factors in mind I just think as it will realistically be November until the election winners get settled, then the summer breaks, we don't really have time to get a policy change through and then tell 4.5 million vehicle owners that how they pay for their car is about to change in a month or two. I suspect we'll get one more stay of execution at least for PHEVs if not all EVs with messaging starting to come out early next year and preparations for the all in on RUC for everyone in FY26.

No need for it to be checked right away. You log on, enter your speedo, buy your RUC, and get the ticket in the mail - exactly the same as the RUC system right now.

Come WoF time, the inspector enters your speedo, just like they do now. Numbers don't match? Here's the bill...

This is not re-inventing the wheel, there must be hundreds of people who do this every day already.

I'm, going to make a new thread to discuss the RUC on all vehicles thing, beyond the impact on EV's.

That RUC business is a ticking timebomb about to blow up in the Govt's face (whichever Govt that might be!). Without a legislative change between now and April, PHEV owners will start paying the same RUC as a full electric owner. But then they already also pay the FED (tax) on any petrol they buy, so effectively are taxed twice. Neither the NZTA nor the MoT know what to do about it.......

My understanding is that, once the exemption lapses PHEV's will (as RUC licensed vehicles), will be able to claim back their petrol tax with the MR70 form.

IANAL but I think the problem is exactly the other way round: because a PHEV is petrol-fuelled, it's not RUC liable but most PHEVs will have enough battery range to complete their day's commute on battery alone, then charge up overnight. This would give them an enormous running cost advantage over all other vehicle types.
As I understand it, to make PHEVs liable for RUCs will require a legislation change

Because a PHEV's motive power is partially derived from an external source of electricity, Once the current exemption lapses, it will become liable.

Stuff: The driver faces a 11.9-inch display and next door is a 14.9-inch infotainment system touchscreen.The occupant of the front passenger seat gets a 10.9-inch touchscreen. They can use this to help the driver with things like setting the navigation system and changing radio stations.

Seems crazy to me... should allow the passenger to do that stuff from their phone via BT or Wifi.

They do, and if it is past the RUC license you get sent a RUC arrears invoice.

Of course it is practical - it applies to all the diesel vehicles now. No reason it can't be applied to all vehicles other than compliance.

Yes they do, but for those with new vehicles, a WOF is (up to) three years away.

Yes they do, but for those with new vehicles, a WOF is (up to) three years away.

I don't imagine it taking a lot of extra effort for them to send you out a reminder if you have not bought a RUC in three years. You still have to register the car annually at the longest: if you have not bought a RUC in a year but are still registering the car you are much more likely to be evading RUCs than collecting vehicles which you continue to register just for the occasional summer jaunt in the country.

"North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE)’s is the group running the Run on Less event. Mike Roeth of NACFE has said that the Pepsi Tesla Semi are performing some of these real world tests with 80000 lbs gross weight loads. This is within 2000 pounds of the legal maximum payloads and prove that Tesla Semi can operate at the max loads. The Tesla Semis have been driving over 400 miles on a single charge with full loads and average speeds of 65 miles per hour."

I think the big question for truckies will be what the actual maximum payload is, which seems to be about 44,000lb (large battery) or 49,000lb (small battery).

As someone commented on that page

A typical class 8 diesel truck weights about 17,000 lbs. It needs about 2,100 lbs. of fuel (diesel). The Tesla probably is 15,000 to 16000 without the battery. Then add 10,000 for the 500 mile battery or 5000 lbs for the 300 mile battery. This is 26,000 lbs. for the truck. Take off 19,000, and you are about -8,000 lbs. compared to a typical diesel for now.

So you lose about 20% of your payload when you go electric.
