EVs and Beyond YT video reports:

* white is the ‘free’ option
* blue, grey and black an additional $1595
* ‘shark grey’ additional $3000; only available on the Performance.

Yes. When you click on the different colours on the BYD website it doesn’t adjust the price. I guess the web designers need to take a look at the Tesla order page to see how to do it properly.

The bottom of the brochure for the Seal (pdf) does indeed have the premium you pay for different colours. The colours are all pretty sucky really. I wonder if they’ll offer red later, like they did for the Atto 3?

Once ORCs are considered, the “Premium” (single motor long range) is very similar in price to the Model 3LR. While you have to pay $11000 more to get the second motor in the Seal (Performance). You do get indicator stalks though.

Yep. And Tesla seem determined to ‘limbo’ under it when it comes to the human machine interface. Until we get neural implants that is.

This was Scotland's equivalent of the Auckland anniversary flood, it was not "normal rainy weather"-  there is more to this story than is being told...

"Much of Scotland experienced widespread and prolonged rainfall from 6 to 7 October 2023, with 100 to 150mm falling widely across a swathe of the Southern and Central Highlands and heavy rain also extending to the east coast. The heavy rain was due to an ‘atmospheric river’ – a narrow stream of moisture laden air capable of causing very high rainfall totals. This was the wettest 2-day period on record for Scotland in a series from 1891."

So this battery replacement or whatever is an insurance job then, and not something the owner has to pay himself.

I thought this was a joke.

In some ways the simplification is admirable.  But when it comes to indicators, there is an argument for standardised and ergonomic controls.

They cant even standardize what side they stick them on, or what pushing it gently does as far as cancelling them.

Yeah they weren't invented to work that way as a luxury item - they were designed that way because it's the best way for them to work without the driver having to do contortions to reach the control while turning the steering wheel.

Ever since the Model 3 was released, Tesla has been removing stuff. Radar, USS, passenger lumbar support and now steering column stalks. All make manufacturing cheaper, and even the one piece taillights must be cheaper to manufacture and install than the two-piece units. The only thing to be added is the rear seat screen. It must be the only car that needs third party equipment to just restore normal functionality rather than enhance driving. I do believe Tesla is missing an opportunity by not having certified aftermarket items such as a driver’s/heads-up display, control stalks, audio and lighting enhancements.

I am convinced they would do away with the steering wheel and just have vehicle control through the touchscreen if they could get away with it! Ultimately the aim is full autonomy.

This is where the BYD Seal comes in. A move conventional Model 3 alternative that is cheaper than the Polestar 2, Ioniq 6 and i4.

Had a weekend away with an ID4. Easily able to do Auckland > Taupo from 90% and still have 100km left in reserve. We were also staying somewhere with a Tesla destination charger that had basically no guests after Monday so I was able to fill up without any head-aches - still checked in on Plugshare with mobile details so I could be reached if needed, but the car was able to take 10kw at a time so it wasn't on there long.

Overall happy with it as a road-tripping car. Only slight downside was the extension road-works and temporary road-markings/lack thereof meant the lane-keeping assistance was sometimes kicked into action without warning, but other than that it was a relatively stress-free experience.

The only problems I had was with charging cable ports (too short in one place) and a faulting station in town when I wanted to just top-up while we did a supermarket shop. Realistically this kind of drive (or our return trip to the mountains when we were down there) is going to be the longest I do these days given these are now family holidays, and the days of doing 800km in one day are well and truly over.

Even if the battery was to wear down to 80% capacity I still think it would be capable of making that drive.

Disclosure: I work for a VW-related company.

For >60k I'd be expecting features to be added, not removed.

I saw a Polestar the other day.  Reminded me of a 1990s Renault.

Haha! I see what you mean. Mind you I have a soft spot for 1980s Renaults having grown up with R1100, R12 and R16. Dreamed of a Fuego back in the day - that's the most Polestar looking one!

Had to google to see what you were referring to and yes I can see the R19 likeness of the MY24 Polestar2. Ours is a MY22 with the black grille so a different appearance again in which I can see hints of Subaru or the 'Transformer' model Camaro.

The Polestar 2 has a weird muscle car vibe and I love the black wheels/black paint look on it. Gives it a real presence that you don't usually get with electrics.

My main issue with Polestar is that unless you spring for dual motor you are getting front wheel drive. I really can't understand why they did that. Rear wheel drive is a much better driver's experience and with no transmission tunnel or driveshaft needed, why would you do front? Doesn't that add complication, CV joints too?
