PJ48:

Looking for advice about EV efficiency during winter.

We have an MG 4 Excite 51. Bought in Sept last year and has been averaging 17 kWh/100 km for the last 8500 km. In the last few weeks it has suddenly jumped up to average around 21 kWh/100 km for the current driving patterns. We do a lot of very short trips, and when starting out it will sit at 29.8 kWh/100 km for the first 2- 3 km then slowly drop.

Is this to do with the ambient temperature (currently varying 3 - 13 degrees) or is this more than should be expected?

17kWh / 100km is a bit on the high side. Heavy foot?

Using the AC / heater will reduce the efficiency.....as it would for any car, EV or not. (If you did. I don't know).

My LEAF's efficiency today going Opotiki to Whakatane and back this morning (5C) was 15.6kWh / 100km and we had the heater on for part of that.

That has allayed my fears. How do I preheat the MG - do you mean the battery? - I didn't know I could do that.

Yeah, I was indeed just referring to warming the interior not preconditioning the battery (which I don’t think we can do in the MG4). And, just to clarify for others, yep the aircon can be turned on remotely in the MG4 via their app; it’s somewhat clunky (requires a PIN to enable each time, and the app only lets one person be logged in at the same time) and runs for a set 10 minutes, but it works fine. Especially valuable in the base model as we have no heated seats!

Noting the OP's comment that much of their driving consists of short trips, I'd say there's a good chance this is a key reason for their relatively low economy; as I noted above, we have the same car and similar driving distances (lots of short trips in a city with short blocks and poor traffic flow management), and we have a similar average economy.

This is, of course, more of an issue with ICE cars, given the amount of wasted energy in starting the car and the lack of energy recuperation, but it's most definitely still an issue with EVs.

Conclusive proof that it was economic conditions that caused the catastrophic decline in EV registrations rather than the end of the Clean Car Scheme. And by 'conclusive proof' I mean that 9 out of 10 are utes or SUVs / 2 out of 10 start at prices lower than EVs.

@PJ48
I have a MG4 excite & live in Dunedin. I do not recommend battery pre-heatting for short trips. I found it majorly killed the range.

I had it on for a week and my efficency blew out to over 24+Wh/100km.
The issue was I took a short 5km trip, the battery just got warm using extra power and then i turned the car off for the day and the battery cooled down. When I when home I repeated the process.
So all the extra energy used to heat the battery was always wasted.

Personally I don't think battery preheating is useful unless you are going on a long drive, and the car battery heats up as you use it anyway so it is probably marginal.

As to your question about winter range, here in Dunedin with our hills over winter my MG4 has dropped from ~16-17 KWh/100 km to 19-20 KWh/100km.
I think it is is a combo of aircon heating and cold temperates.

@Scott3 it looks like the Z chademo chargers were only temporarily set to 25kW and will soon be upgraded to 50kW

Looks like I am getting a BYD Atto3 to replace my Toyota RAV4 Hybrid as a company car.
Getting the charger fitted in a month and the car in around 6-8 weeks.

Anyone have one, or have any experience with one?

I test drove one twice but neither my wife or I could get comfortable on the seats with integrated headrest, I found they pushed my head forwards at an uncomfortable angle. That was a show stopper for us. Otherwise, the driving experience was quite good, nicer to drive than the MG ZS in my opinion.
A friend at work has one and he seems generally happy but recently it was unserviceable due to the 12v battery being flat, seems there is a battery management problem between the main and 12v batteries

I drove them via the Mevo carshare fleet a few times.

Interior styling is weird (dashboard styling inspired by a muscle, door pockets inspired by a Guitar etc). My 6 year old loved this.

Perhaps a touch shorter than the rav4 hybrid. Interior / boot space is adequate, but not massive.

Refinement / NVH seemed quite a bit better than the Rav4 hybrid.

It's FWD (vs the AWD rav4 hybrid

Only brand to offer a LFP battery in a version of their car which isn't the standard range.

I just looked up BYD's website, and it looks like they are no longer selling the Standard range, so you might be in luck and get the extended range (420km WLTP conversion).

If I recall correctly the spec is quite good, with stuff like 360 degree camera, vehicle to load (I didn't try that), rotating screen etc.

Spec sheet for the currently offered models is here:

https://www.bydauto.co.nz/storage/uploads/fa174575-1d2e-492e-8768-c7ecbfc941a5/BYD-ATTO-3-Extended-and-TACHYON-Spec-Sheet---2nd-July-2024_web.pdf

Note the payload is fairly low at 410kg.

Interested to hear how money works with the charger (assuming your employer is installing the charger you mentioned at your home?)

I drove a BYD once as a Mevo and didn't like it, but I'm probably not the target audience for a car like that. I felt that over time the radical interior design probably wouldn't stand up well to wear and tear.

From what I can tell, it looks like I'll be paid 40c per KWh for charging at home to compensate for the additional electricity usage. I think the charging unit will be hooked up via wifi to H/O somehow.
