Yeah, as per gzt, (non plug in) hybrids from Toyota / Lexus at least have been proven highly reliable over decades.

While the complexity seems bad on paper, in reality they are considered some of the more reliable vehicles on the road. Perhaps the biggest thing is the eCVT transmission used in these cars avoids many of the weaknesses in conventional Auto, CVT & Manual transmissions.

Below example has made it past 500,000km

I don't really consider (non plug in) hybrids as a stepping stone to EV's. I just consider it a simple hack go ~40% further on the same amount of fuel. (A very impressive win, well worth having).

The current auto market slowness (which is being practically felt in the EV space in NZ), does mean buyers have options they couldn't have dreamed off a few years back.

My current pick is the below (no association) 2023 Ioniq 6 77.4 kWh (Long range) RWD with 16,800km, asking $51,990.

www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/hyundai/ioniq-6/listing/4821075020

This is what I consider the ultimate (non luxury, Available in NZ) long distance touring EV, with 614 WLTP rated range & 800V fast charging (10-80% in 18 mins).

At the upper end of the market, we have a $35k discount being offered on the highest trim of the EV9.

At the bottom end of the market, we just had a price cut on the MG ZS EV, making it once again the cheapest EV on the market (beating out the heavenly run out discounted LDV eT60, also a SAIC car)

My second look at eT60. Recent articles indicate the warranty increased to 8-year/160,000km battery and 3-year/160,000km mechanical.

The rear motor mount on one side still looks weird to me and seeing the battery underneath scares me a bit. On the other hand overseas specs have it wading max 550mm impressive for EV and obviously not any problem for the battery mount location.

There is an eT60 on the road in my area and it does look nice. One thing on my mind - someone is bound to ask me to tow them out of something and I'll have to say no - if it's bigger than a Leaf/1500kg. Next model not really an issue it's said to have a 3500kg tow rating.

A lot of stuff that seemed unforgivable on an ~$80,000 vehicle, like the motor bolted to the rear solid axle, turn key start, no cruise control, is a lot more forgivable on a a vehicle which can be had for $42k + ORC new, or $40k ex demo.

I wouldn't have any concern about the battery location. Basically every EV has their battery in this location. Ground up EV's have it tucked away a little better, but shared platforms like the Kona, MG ZS EV etc, have it sticking out like the eT60 and it doesn't seem to cause any issues

Motor & inverter locations is a bit more of a concern. This configuration adds a decent chunk of unspring weight, and the flexible power wires & cooling pipes are going to add another area of potential failure.

On towing, 1500kg is quite a bit. We had a (very smokey, naturally aspirated diesel) ute when I was growing up, and did a heap of towing, yet never towed anything over 1500kg with it.

We had a powerboat like the one in the below image, which is 1500kg on a trailer (with a 150HP 2 stroke):

THE HISTORY OF KIWI TRAILER BOATS BY THE DECADES PART FIVE: The 1990's – Power Boat Magazine

But yeah, to stick within a 1500kg tow rating, as a general rule, you would need to avoid (loaded) car transporters, Larger boats, Larger caravans etc. That said there is not a legal requirement to comply with tow rating in NZ (as long as your combination can stop quickly enough).

As a side note, towing heaver stuff (especially anything in excess of 75% of the weight of the tow vehicle), needs serious care (and some basic knowledge). Unless somebody is familiar with towing heavy stuff, I would recommend turning down request from friends & family to tow loaded car transporter's, tiny homes etc.

Could always skip the towbar completely....

Note that most NZ ute buyers will budget for Hard lid / soft tonneau / canopy, which can add some cost. Nice to keep your stuff dry and out of sight.

As to the value of the eT60, it really comes down to how much you value the ute styling, having a tray & the 750kg payload.

If you don't value those things, you are end up with a EV which is power hungry, fairly slow, poor riding etc, has slow DC charging, and an award charge port location.

For comparison we could take a EV6 LR RWD ex demo:

www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/kia/ev6/listing/4710094452

$9k more (and registered a calendar year prior to the ex demo eT60's), but you get much more range 325km  vs 528 km, 100kg more tow rating, 800v fast charging, basic stuff like cruise control, more power....... But you lose the tray. Man to I miss the space we had in the rear canopy in the ute we owned in my child hood.

There's a video from China of a Chinese EV manufacturer reaction to an EV fire.

The EV is just put out when a person arrives with a hammer and chisel to remove the exterior logos, and then uses a black car cover to hide the car.

Adjacent cars don't get same treatment. The presenter wouldn't say who the manufacturer was. It looked like a "V" shaped logo, perhaps Changan.

A Changan electric concept car caught fire during the Guangzhou Auto Show in December 2022.

It was "The China show"

One of my workmates has got rid of his fairly flash Ford Raptor, apparently the cost of diesel and road tax has been too much for him. He has bought a Cupra Born, he told me they were getting rid of demonstrator models by knocking $10k off. Seeing a big, fuel hungry vehicle replaced with a BEV makes me happy!

He was also telling me that his power company gives him 3 hours of free power and that is usually enough to get the car charged - he is saving HEAPS!

Nissan NZ are flogging off all their pre-registered/demonstrator Leafs at half price.

E.g.

60KWh: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/nissan/leaf/listing/4852347873

39KWh: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/nissan/leaf/listing/4854337476

The only problem is that it's still a Leaf and a M3 is so much sexier.

He'll be saving the cost of fuel, He's still paying for RUC at the same rate, and is in KM, so he will spend exactly the same on "Road Tax"

Indicated $72,990 full price for a new 60KWh Leaf has to be a joke!

Well, I am getting the BYD Atto3 in a couple of weeks.

Company is moving from ICE and Hybrid to full electric fleet.
Will be getting my charger installed in the next week or so, then dealer will be handing over the new car a couple of weeks after that.
Not sure if I am looking forward to it or not - I really like my Hybrid RAV4 and would happily own one again. With range of 800km or more on a tank of gas and a fully charged battery, I feel a lot more comfortable than I will with the Atto3 and its claimed range of 400km or so.

But I won't look a gift horse in the mouth - it's a company car with full personal use, so I can't complain - and I am getting a charger added to my house for nothing - another small bonus.

Nice - I hope you like it - The Atto 3 generally gets pretty good reviews.

You will have a 'fuel pump' at your house. You can charge it whenever you want and dont have to drive off to a petrol station.

Unless you frequently drive around 400km in a single day the range probably wont mean that much to you.

It also means that if you get power outages at home, you can connect up to around 2kw of electrical items and run them off the battery which is pretty good.

Plug in car vehicles have exceeded 50% of sales in china. This is huge:

https://carnewschina.com/2024/08/07/chinese-new-energy-vehicle-car-sales-50-84-july-preliminary-figures-show/

Sounds like basically all the legacy automakers China operations are screwed, and there operations have quickly gone from very profitable to loss making, with little signs of being able to recover... And Tesla is facing stiff completion.

Fiat has recently dropped the price of their 500e and 500e Abarth to be similarly priced to their petrol versions, $ 34990 for standard and $39,990. I don't think the range is much, but they sure are a funky car
