Scott3:

2025 Seal details have been released in china.

Adds:

  • Roof mounted LiDAR
  • 800v fast charging (Assumed based on the Sea Lion 07)
  • Updated appearance

And it gets a price cut.

The longer range one’s battery is also slightly smaller (80.1 vs 82 kWh) but supposedly has more efficient motor(s) so no drop in range. Shame it won’t have the Blade2 battery.

Most notable to me is the revised interior has replaced the driver’s display “tablet” with a continuous screen. Much better looking IMO. What I can’t work out from the renders, is where the HVAC vents are? I can see the ones in front of the centre console, but not the ones in front of the driver/passenger. They are clearly visible at the outer edges of the dash in the DM-i render but not in the BEV one (which looks like it’s going to be called the Seal 7). But then (in the render) the DM-i also has a visor over the driver’s display the same as the Sealion 6 whereas the Seal 7 doesn’t.

I’m hoping they don’t drop features to keep the price down. For instance the Sealion 6 doesn’t have lumbar support (IIRC).

I wondering if the LiDAR will be only in the Chinese market initially?

There may be some good runout deals on the current Seal models if the projected arrival in Australasia of the Seal 7 in Q1/2 2025 is correct.

An EV RV - while I'd hate to see too many of these on NZ roads, and wouldn't be keen on towing something this large, they look fantastic. Coolest feature, as they discuss towards the end, is that the larger capacity version has a motor that takes all the towing strain off the towing vehicle, saving its range.

Fiat has recently dropped the price of their 500e and 500e Abarth to be similarly priced to their petrol versions, $ 34990 for standard and $39,990. I don't think the range is much, but they sure are a funky car

I occasionally get ads for FIAT on facebook, and not too long ago they were advertising the 500e Abarth at $75k, so that's almost half price! I'd be miffed if I'd paid the previous pricing. Although $75k was wayyy too much for that thing in the first place.

Isn't Abarth basically just Fiat in racing stripes these days? Their parent company Stellantis is thinking out loud of putting some fellow brands out to pasture if they don't shape up.

For the petrol model, they are quite different (different tune, more HP, different suspension etc). I guess its akin to Holden / HSV and Ford/FPV, similar donor vehicle, different end result. There are 2 petrol abarth models, normal and competizione with the latter being even more powerful, stiffer ride, louder exhaust and a few other internal bits. My wife has the normal Abarth, its a fun car to drive (5sp manual).

There was a review in Driven recently of the 695 (basically same car as 595) that said the Abarth E was just as much fun to drive. The E version does have an external speaker that somewhat emulates the sound of a motor (you can even rev it), good for a giggle, but thats about it.

I think you'd be a bit unhappy with the price drop, but no more so than the other EVs that have reduced markedly in price in recent months.

We have another new cheapest ev. Fiat have slashed the 500 and abarth pricing down to starting from $35k+ORC. Not a huge car but fine as a small commuter or city runabout.

Zero registrations logged in the last three months.

So in this case the person who just brought one at 75k is completely hypothetical.

I guess the market agrees with your assessment that $75k is too much for a tiny EV with fairly short range & slow fast charging by modern standards.

However at $35 - $41k, you in the same price range as a high spec Yaris hybrid. At this price point I would expect they have a decent run of sales, from people who would otherwise by a new yaris, Jazz etc.

Tiny external dimesons & funky styling would make it appealing as an urban runabout at the new price point.

I’ve been looking at EVs and specifically, Hyundai

That was until I saw how much they were taxing NZ drivers

The Ioniq 5 N is CDN 80,000, US 68,000, Eur 51,400 in France and Germany,

$95700 , $110000, $91300 respectively

In NZ $134000

I get when it’s $10k more.. we’re a small market, but $40,000 more? That’s taking the piss

Sorry Hyundai, I won’t be rewarding greed, no matter how cool your car

Polestar is the hot ticket this week

Standard range Single motor models are down to $54,990 and all have the Pilot lite pack installed, which adds dimmed mirrors, adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist, 12 parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. In terms of tech specs, these Polestar 2s offer 546km of range with a rear-mounted motor making 200kW/490Nm in output.

Picked up my new BYD Atto3 today.

It's quite a departure from the more traditional RAV4 Hybrid I've come from.

I need to tune the front strings in the door compartments, so that I can play Smoke on the Water properly, but other than that, so far so good.

Immediately upon arriving home, I got a notification that there was a software update available - 18 min later and I was able to enable wireless Apple Carplay (which took a lot of faffing to get working but now connects in seconds and works flawlessly).
This is particularly good, as it means I can use the wireless charging pad while still listening to Apple Music or Rova.

A few little things I have noticed

  • The large rotating screen is quite distracting and I am unlikely to ever use in portrait mode.
  • Lack of a frunk, despite there being enough room for one is also a missed opportunity.
  • Vehicle has a very small rear window, so vision is not amazing in the rearview mirror
  • USB ports - a couple in the front, one of which is a USB-C, but the only USB-A is the interface for Apple carplay, so that's a bit of a design flaw.
  • Not that much storage in the cabin, compared to the Toyota, but the boot is really well designed with the raised floor, enabloing storage of umbrellas etc under the floor and out of the way
  • No spare wheel - a bottle of sealant and a pump (electric) are supplied
  • Heated electric front seats are a nice touch
  • Can't permanently turn off the lane assist features
  • Electric sunroof as standard is also nice
  • It's SO QUIET
  • It's so torquey and quick off the mark!
  • Overall, it's nice despite its quirks.
