Aaaaaand the next time you go to drive an ICE you'll think to yourself "Is there something wrong with this car? It's making a lot of noise and has no pickup..."

Hmm.  We hired the Atto3 pre-facelift version in Perth for 10 days in Feb.  OH (main driver) frequently complained how 'sluggish' it was (possibly an EV expectation issue but it certainly wasn't 'peppy').  Never did get around to tuning those door strings!

There’s certainly a big difference in torque and response between modes (sport, normal and eco).

I drove one once as a Mevo and also found the performance lacking, but I assumed it was probably due to the drive mode selected. I didn't attempt to figure it out as I found the car to be over complicated, and felt like it was designed to compete with Tesla rather than the mainstream manufacturers.

Interesting; I’ve only driven an Atto 3 once (as a test drive) and didn’t find it lacking on the uptake. It doesn’t have an accelerator as sensitive as the MG4 (even my wife’s base-model Excite is always rearing to go) but I didn’t think it was slow off the mark, especially compared to nearly every standard ICE car (ie, it still had the EV pep). But, yeah, I refuse to drive any EV in eco mode - they’re already so efficient and cheap to run why would I neuter the drive like that?!

Now, the base model of the BYD Dolphin, that’s another story! 0-100 in 12.3 seconds makes most ICEs seem like rocket ships…

12.3 for 0-100 seems average for any EV.
(not that I have ever bothered to try to in any car in my life)

Looked at my excite 51km rating and it's 7.6s.
Even my 24KW 2016 Nissan leaf is 10.4s in theory.

I really miss the torque when I have to drive petrol these days.

Depends on what you're comparing it too. Can't say I've been blown away with the acceleration of the EV's I've driven.  No doubt YMMV.

I suppose ... but even an old Leaf has more than enough torque to be fun off the line.

No doubt.

I know one of my ICE has 0-100 figures just as quick as figures I see quoted for a lot of Tesla's and the like. It's top speed is limited to 240 kph. It's nothing top end as far as cars go.

A couple of weeks into the new BYD and I have to say there are some annoyances that are hard to get past when comparing to my previous vehicle (RAV4 Hybrid).

  • Driving position - I simply cannot get this right. The fixed headrest is the wrong shape and position for me and it's annoying!

    • I can't find a balance between being relaxed and more upright as a result of the headrest and I am starting to get a sore lower back
    • Lack of good lumbar support
  • Small rear window - looking out of the rear vision mirror is bad when the car is empty. With passengers it's impossible
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is awful in this car

    • I used to use the ACC all the time in my RAV as it was really well implemented - it would match the speed of the traffic beautifully and rarely pick up a ghost impact (I'll explain)
    • Ghost impacts - ACC is harsh and unpredictable - it will suddenly brake when there is no other car near me - assumedly picking up vehicles or pedestrioans from the spirit realm
    • ACC is also quite scary - I have come from a vehicle that more-or-less drove itself when using ACC - this will race towards the vehicle in front and then slam the brakes on at the last second, which is not at all what I was expecting from a new car!
  • Constant intrusion from "safety" or "convenience" features - there are a number of intrusions I will have to work out how to disable - lane assist, some noises that appear out of nowhere from the audio system to alert me to (who knows what?)
  • No auto-wipers - on my base-model RAV I got very used to auto everything - wipers were super handy - now I am re-learning manual controls
  • The massive screen is a fingerprint magnet and is just on the wrong angle for my wife - she is quite sensitive to glare and it often blinds her

I know a lot of this is "first world problems", but for a brand new and fairly premium-feeling vehicle its got a few things quite wrong.

Having driven many new cars, the tesla is by far the least annoying with these intrusive features which is one reason I went with it.

One of the people on youtube with some byd showed what fuses to pull do disable the annoying stuff on it, and it just makes an orange light appear so its not a wof issue as the fails are on red ones.

If I recall correctly, this is a company vehicle isn’t it?

If that is the case, maybe your back discomfort would be a health and safety issue?

The only BYDs I have driven are the Seal and the Sealion. Strangely the Seal had adjustable lumbar support, the Sealion didn’t. Regardless, both vehicles had fixed headrests and the seats were supportive and comfortable. However, the Atto and Dolphin may be equipped with lower quality seats to meet the price point.

As someone that has suffered from lower back problems for many years, lumbar support is non negotiable. I did have to buy a lumbar cushion to use in a RAV4 I hired a few years ago.

Yes - Company car.
My guess (if I were to mention the sore back to HR) is that they’d simply cash me out of my car.
I think I’d rather have a niggly back.

The fixed head rests in the Atto3 were a deal breaker for me. Test drove one twice and even bought some special cushions to compensate but couldn't get comfortable. Seems weird to assume everyone has the same head shape. I have a large head and with the BYD seats I either had to have my head bent uncomfortably forwards or lean forward at the waist and have my back unsupported

Don't know how the Atto3's headrests are fitted but in a previous car we pulled the HR right out and refitted in reverse for my partner who found them uncomfortable. The HR just had 2 shafts that slid down inside the seat, so reversable.
