Well, I have a Blackvue DR500GW-HD for sale now if anyone is interested (Send me a PM). Selling because I have upgraded to the dual camera DR650GW-2CH.

Thinking somewhere around $200 would be an ok price for it (I bought it for $399). Its NZ bought in august 2013.

Oh well. I was out bid on the TradeMe, and as these things sometimes do, the winner actually paid close to the buy now price. What's wrong with some people?! So back to the drawing board.

Forgot to mention that mount on two cameras have already been damaged - one by hot sun at the beach - completely melted and another cracked. Had to create DIY mount and attach to the spot where the rear mirror is connected.
Hence advice - do not leave dash cam and the mount in the closed car under the sun for too long....
My camera captured again last weekend an idiot in BMW on Piha road overtaking few cars in one go accross solid yellow line. Had to pull over to the side to let them go. Their car was full of passengers. Their chances were very tiny....

So I finally committed and got a DOD LS430W, which is still on its way, so with that in mind, I fitted the USB socket up bu the interior light in my Pajero. My problem is that there was no ignition switched 12 volts up there, and I really didn't feel like pulling everything to bits to get it there, so the socket is permanently powered. Is that going to cause me problems if I forget to turn the camera off? What is the typical current draw of a dash cam?

Are you sure its powered all the time, I thought that about mine (BMW) when I hard wired mine in however when the ignition is turned off the car goes to sleep after x amount of time cutting power to the camera.
Pehaps yours might do the same, worth checking anyway.

You will be ok for a day or 2. Best just get a USB charger doctor and see what current the camera actually takes, You can probably get an idea of its power needs from the time it will run and the capacity of the internal battery.

Awesome choice of dash cam!

The DOD camera has an auto-record, auto-power on and auto-power off mechanism, which only works if the current to the camera terminates when the ignition switch is off unfortunately.
I would recommend you rewire it to facilitate this.

Also you will most likely find that the included USB cord is VERY long (at least 2, maybe even 3 meters).. so get yourself a short USB wire :)

Thanks for all the replies. I thought Presso was onto something with the time out. The inside light does go out when you lock from the outside, or turn the ignition on. So I sat outside with a tiny USB powered plastic Christmas tree, but it was not to be. There are two cables to the interior light. A permanent live, an unknown but I was not able to see power on it. Earth is via chassis return. It's possible that the auto power off circuitry is built into the light, in which case I might be able to come off that — although I'd worry about over loading it.

I took ages homing in on the DOD. The Blackvue options are nice, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much. Another nice looking camera had the IR LEDs on the front which I'd read caused glare and messed things up, so it came down to the Mini 806 or DOD. There are lots of posts about the earlier 803 over heating, and the Techmoan guy gave up on reviewing the 806 after having two that did not work.

If I can't suss out an ignition switched live from the interior light, I'll have to bite the bullet and run a cable under the screen rubber.

I have ordered a micro SD card, but I'm still looking for a short USB to mini USB cable.

A nice neat solution for a short power cable if you have a USB socket by your interior light. It looks like I just won the only one currently available with USB to mini USB (there are stacks with micro USB) but I expect they will relist soon.

Ive found those retractable ones have heaps of voltage drop and I wasnt able to charge my phone on one.
