At what point do the people taking the keys start being charged? I wonder if this might start happening, like you say, it's getting a bit out of hand, particularly in a country where tourism is big.

This guy who took the keys should've been charged, at a mininum just pour encourager les autres.

agree. but it appears the rural people won't be party to this. might as well just ask all the tourists not to come here, go to australia instead.

It's almost like a copycat game.

Looking at the article, it says "The Otago Peninsula resident saw a rental car parked in the middle of the southbound lane of Highcliff Rd on Saturday afternoon.". I assume that the picture associated with the article was taken from Mr Penman's car dashcam and is supposed to illustrate the problem.

Except that it pretty much contradicts his story. I see the rental car parked as far to the left as possible, admittedly still blocking half of one lane, there being no hard shoulder. It also appears that there is sufficient clear road ahead of the parked car to be able to overtake it, albeit with some care required. And it appears that Mr Penfold's car is further to the right than the tourist's car. From this picture, I'd say that *Penfold* was the cause of the backup of 8 cars. He's engineered this situation so that he can display his "righteous indignation" and "moral uprightness" and throw his weight around as a tourist vigilante aka bully.

I think that its outrageous that when the tourists pulled off the road to allow the backlog to pass, they were then blocked in by Penfold. They've done their best to get out of his way and let him pass, and he's used that as an opportunity to harass them further, and steal their car keys.

I wonder if he would treat New Zealanders this way? Or white people?

I agree... Penfold should be charged with theft, illegal detention, and inconsiderate driving.

I suspect that the foreign tourist "problem"  is a lot less than the NZ media  are hyping up up to be..  Local drivers can be way more of a concern..

Yup... I just looked at the NZTA accident map. Looks like tourists cause about as many accidents as fatigued Kiwi drivers. I don't see any Kiwis having their keys taken off them because they're tired.

WTF?

Tourist fined for 178km/h rip teaches British police driving skills.

An English tourist fined in Queenstown today for driving at 178kmh teaches driving skills to English police officers.

Peter Lee, 46, of Kent, appeared for sentencing before Judge Michael Crosbie at Queenstown District Court.

He was convicted yesterday of a charge of driving at a dangerous speed after being clocked at 178kmh in a 100kmh speed zone on State Highway 6 near Hokitika on Sunday.

We can't exactly see if that's on a straight-away, or just as they have rounded a bend. nor if there are any sort of dashed yellows, or a no stopping sign at the start of the section.

And seems to be clear cut if it is infact seen as a rise and rather obstructive. I, and most others sure as hell wouldn't park in that spot I would like to think. At least find a driveway to move out of the firing line

http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2004/0427/latest/DLM303099.html

A driver or person in charge of a vehicle must not stop, stand, or park the vehicle on any part of a roadway so close to any corner, bend, rise, dip, traffic island, or intersection as to obstruct or be likely to obstruct other traffic or any view of the roadway to the driver of a vehicle approaching that corner, bend, rise, dip, traffic island, or intersection unless the stopping, standing, or parking is authorised by signs or markings maintained by the road controlling authority.

I found some official data on tourist road accidents.

I don't think this has been posted before in this thread.

I feel the Press and others (Social media) need to back off they hype. The vigilante attitude and actions generating from all this has high risk and someone is going to take things too far and it will end tragically. This is a classic example why I strongly oppose the notion of giving the public more power.

these happen a lot and i don't recommend people taking keys, just like i don't recommend people taking keys just because someone's half parked on the road with solid white line [not broken yellow] obstructing you driving at 100 round a bend. yes, it's a stupid place to park but ... these were things i encountered myself: let's see

- old people driving at 20kph in 50 zone
- old people driving at 60-70 in 100 zone
- a BMW M3 parked on a yellow line in town
- a Porsche GT3 parked with half its car outside of the 5 min park box
- drunk students on the road at night
- someone stopping on the road for no apparent reason [usually non local, or old people]
- skateboarder on the road
- old people double parked because they thought that was a park space, obstructing the road
- cyclists biking 4 abreast
- pedestrian happily walking in front of ypu to cross the road making you stop for them
- truck cutting in front of pedestrian crossing when the green man is still solid
- idiot overtaking and then cutting in forcing overtaken car to perform emergency brake
- etc

I gave you a tick!

I do agree that the media is hyping this! I am not so sure about your last sentence tho:) Elitist at best ..at worst... let's not go there.

I have looked at the official crash figures for foreign drivers and it is not clear to me if there is a real problem or not.

The accidents in some areas (lower South Island) look very worrying. But, is that because foreign drivers represent a large proportion of the drivers doing a lot of distance?

I don't know. We need more info.

I do think things are getting a little out of control.

Tourism is a far too important industry, for this situation to continue.

This is a time for our elected government to step up and provide some leadership on this!
