Obraik:

Easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, right? 😉

Totally! Actually, I reckon she'll be excited as well; she loved the 3 we drove in Wgtn, and will be pleased we don't have to have it in black or white. [Edit: managed to get hold of her and, yep, she's fine about it and excited, so all good on the home front.]

With a price under $80k, after rebate and sale of my current car it'll be less than $60k outlay - while the most I've spent on a car, I think that's decent value...

I'm genuinely shocked you can get all but red still under cap at the moment

Yeah, I did it too. Went with white. Hopefully wife (sleeping, since we are on the other side of the planet right now) will forgive me.

Is there a risk of the ORC increasing and then going over the 80k threshold? The site says the ORC could change without notice

It depends if Waka Kotahi raises prices on the various components of ORCs. It's unlikely, but I guess they need to stipulate that it is possible.

I think New Zealand has the cheapest Model Y in the world now. Before tax and the rebate applied in NZ it's around US$38k. In the US, Model Y starts at US$54k before tax.

As others have said the US model is not equivalent, ( bigger battery)

in HK a base Y is $341.000 HK  the Ex rate is 1:5 = $68.2 NZD add GST  you hit $78.4K NZ

So its pretty equivalent

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

We get $8625 rebate so the on road actual cost is just under $70k

Right, but my point still stands...the cheapest Model Y you can buy in the US is US$54k before tax. Plenty of people in the US would like to buy the RWD LFP spec that we have. I was also including the rebate in the "cheapest Model Y in the world" claim, which makes it NZ$70k.

How badly can it go, you can either forget the deposit ($400?) or buy it and flick it on for profits..

After three months (because of the declaration you sign to get the rebate) of course.😁

As far as the registration carrying it over the magic $80K. I f that happens you can cancel and only lose the order fee.

If the wait really is only a few months, it will be interesting to see how quickly that blows out here.

The only thing I would/will do differently next time is order white (or whatever the no cost colour is) and get it wrapped. Certainly if you want a Red Model Y that is the way to go.

Edit: It looks like the MYRWD posted above has the same size battery as the M3RWD (going by the WLTP range est). So real world about 400km? I wonder if it’s LFP?

Also would be good if you could pay the delivery fee on a separate invoice…..

Having registered interest I wondered why I hadn’t received an email from Tesla NZ. Lo and behold I go to my emails and…..

 An email from Tesla NZ

”Model Y - Now Available in NZ”

(Sent at 1.30 this afternoon.)

I am interested to see what it’s like. But I imagine there will be a rush to the Ponsonby showroom to view it. The trouble is, if it’s too good how do you start the discussion about “You know that Model 3 we just got? How would you feel about swapping it for a Model Y?”

Weirdly I have still not received an email from Tesla NZ (which I did sign up for), but I had also signed up to the Aus site with a different email address (just in case they launched there earlier) and got that message at the same time (1330) which was about 30 minutes after I'd already put my order in, thanks to Obraik's posting here.

Suckful comms is another reason I'm not the biggest Tesla fan... Hopefully they're better keeping people in the loop once an actual order is in place as opposed to their general communication.

Don’t hold your breath.

Interesting there isn’t a MYLR on offer in NZ. I wonder if it’s because of the long wait times in other parts of the world, or maybe the $80K rebate limit meaning a lack of demand? Certainly, I don’t know if the MY would have been just under $80K if the limit wasn’t there. So that is the one positive for limit.

The MYP at $NZ109K May appeal to some people.

I wonder if the MYRWD has a 1500kg tow rating in NZ?

The NZHerald has news of the availability, so maybe one of their reporters got the email, or there’s been a press release.
