Batman:

I think combining land tow is more effective. why just tow from the water.

True.  They could use the combined power of tens of thousands of camels - ships of the desert - instead of seahorses.

A slightly screwed up translation machine on a news site has come up with the solution

"A plan has been made to remelt the ship, which blocks the Suez Canal, using the tides."

Normally you need hot air.

Scott3:

gzt: Any reason they are not using heavy lift choppers to take a few containers off the top? Slow as but they seem to have the time.

Would require some of the most capable heavy lift helicopters in the world.

Mil Mi-26 tops out at 56tonne lifting

Sikorsky CH-53 Super Stallion lifts 33T.

Containers generally top out around 30 - 36T depending on variant (of course some a full of bean bags).

Would be extremely expensive, but so is the cost of the closure.

Seems like having a couple of helicopters starting offloading would be prudent. Likely turn around would be fairly quick as there is lots of adjacent space to put the containers.

Two containers at say 4 containers per hour each, times 24 horus a day, means 192 containers a day offloaded. If they could get all 40 foot containers, this would be cira 2% of the ships cargo each 24 hours.

Seems worthwhile given it doesn't clash with other efforts like dredging, digging, and pushing with tugs.

They are talking about bringing a land crane in with the goal of taking 600 containers off one end to lighten it. I wonder about the logistics of that compared to helicopters. Apparently there are still high winds in the area. That could be a problem either way.

The logistics of using helicopters isn't good, because there aren't helicopters that can lift the weight of a fully loaded 20 foot container, let alone 40 footers.

Some numbers previously quoted are for total weight not payload. The Russian MI-26 is 28 tonne itself.

Probably still going to be slower than waiting for a proper crane to arrive, and impossible if the winds are still high.

$46B apparently it's cost to be stuck. Ludicrous! How are they calculating that? I imagine it's all sorts of imaginary costs, rather than actual costs.

I heard they were planning to pump out all the bunker fuel and refill the tanks with butane.

You know, because butane is a lighter fluid.

Thanks for that, it made my whole office LOL.

Great start to a Monday.

I overheard a conversation on the way to work where someone said they moved it 90m over the weekend? Must be 90cm right?

Surely if you could move it 90m you could move it anywhere?
