What is it with cyclists/pedestrians walking along main roads and when they come to a side street they just continue on like the footpath is still there, without looking to see if traffic is turning into the street!   It is not like my ford territory has a tiny little quiet engine!

Well they are quite different, you need to avoid the cyclist as you would any other road vehicle - inc if you are overtaking and turning, you need to make sure you arent cutting them off. They are entitled to go straight on past a side road without giving way to anyone, just as a car is.

Peds are quite different, they need to look and give way to traffic.

Cyclist walking are peds and need to give way obviously 👍🏻

So, what you are saying is that if a cyclist is riding their bike, they can go where ever and whenever they like without giving way to any other vehicle.

I haven't seen that particular rule in the road code.

Or, maybe you didn't understand?

Of course not but they can cycle across a side road and not have to give way to traffic on the same road that wants to turn into said side road.

Still don't agree.  I'll explain better .

I am driving on the main road, the cyclist is on the FOOTPATH on the other (right) side of the road travelling in the same direction as myself.

I need to turn right into a side street just up ahead    The cyclist on the footpath reaches the road that I am just about to turn into ...I see a gap in opposing traffic and start turning right into the side street, but the cyclist on the footpath doesn't stop and crosses the side street as I am turning into it.

There would have been no issue had the cyclist been using the road. I've just noticed quite a lot recently that people just cross side streets without looking for traffic turning into them .

So I was on my way home tonight and as I was approaching my intersection (red light, slowing down) some guy does a right turn like this:

In case it's not clear to anyone, there is an island separating the two directions of traffic along the Albany Expressway. If there were any more than just me and another car going down the Expressway at that time, there could have been a head-on. Hell, there could've been a head-on if I'd been in one of the right turn lanes.

Anyway, I give him a blast of the horn as he drives past me in the wrong direction and he has this dumb confused look on his face. He slows down and puts on his left indicator. From what I could see in my mirror, he was figuring out how to drive over the island.

I don't know whether to be charitable and put it down to an innocent mistake, albiet a dangerous one; or if I should suspect the guy was either drunk, stoned or simply incompetent.

I really need to get my dash cam going again.

Also noticed this.  I don't know if it's arrogance, stupidity, lack of awareness or a belief that there are no consequences, but regardless, soft squishy meat sack vs up to 2 ton of metal box, there is only going to be one outcome and as a kid it was drummed into me to ALWAYS look both ways no matter what.  I'll even check both ways on a one way road (luckily in one case).

Look Right❗️ Look Left❗️ Look Right❗️

I was taught that the moment I was allowed near a road by mum, dad, big sister or big brother. I was taught again in Kindergarten traffic school, then again in primary school bicycling traffic school, then again when I started to drive. It is now muscle memory.

BUT what I started to notice first in Sydney, where I lived for 30 years and now here, is that new migrants still tend to Look Left, Look Right, then cross and that is rubbing off onto their kids.

Also people do not know how to keep left on escalators. So if I am in a rush you use the right side of the escalator, I say excuse me rather loudly. Especially on Sydney railway stations very long escalators or airport travelators anywhere.

Of course the "Plugged-In" generation don't look anywhere or at anything. So I just walk straight into them. It should now be:

Unplug❗️Look Right❗️Look Left❗️Look Right❗️

Saw a college kid the other day riding his bicycle, left hand on the handle bar and head down, while using his right hand for the phone with connected ear plugs in. Mind you he also was not wearing a helmet.

Then they get a drivers licence and do exactly the same thing.

Hay look Ma & Pa, I'm the only person on the road.

So is school traffic education gone the same way as school swimming lessons ?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

It's a badly indicated intersection - no lane markings across the intersection, the blue "keep left" arrows have probably been wiped out, and it was dark ...

The driver turning right may have been a bit flummoxed that there are 4 lanes to his right, and the right hand most turning bay was empty, and probably didn't see the slightly raised lane separator ..

That's the status quo but has never actually been written into law. Drivers should be prepared to give way to peds crossing and not just barge into side streets as if they have right of way. Of course pedestrians should extend the same courtesies towards drivers and not step out onto the road if they're unable to stop in time.

This is what I don't understand, most and I mean like 80% of intersections I have seen do not have dotted lines showing how to make the turn and to assist with keeping in your lane, this is what I attribute to people making very strange turns and not keeping to their lane.

Saves the Council money for paint and labour etc!

That is why Fire Hydrants generally do not get a Yellow Circle around them if they can be be parked on!

But CCC have decided not to paint any, unless they get enough complaints!

Google Maps Satellite / StreetView is good at proving they have NEVER painted a legal requirement!

It's a bit blurry. The car has the right of way, but hitting a pedestrian is always wrong. If you're going so fast you can't stop, that's on you.
