Not sure if anyone else here remembers 'The Goodies' and damned if I can find this on Youtube but there's a scene that always sticks in my mind. Think the episode was called "The Race' or something similar where they were getting into a car race.

They modify a car to use extended hands on sticks as indicators. There was three; 'turning left', 'turning right' and one in the middle that was 'turning nasty' [this hand was the old English two-finger flip off].

As to the topic I have a few minor gripes:

I do wish more motorcycle riders were careful in motorway traffic when going between lanes then zipping in and out. On a related note I've seen a few motorcycles use the new somewhat protected bicycle lanes on Kirkbride road in Mangere, is that legitimate?

That won't help him because since 3SLG isn't a plate they will look at the hi res image and be able to figure it out pretty easily. He might even have the rego label still visible somewhere.

Even if that doesn't work and since it's not an 80's bike, nor a tractor, it would be pretty easy to ID that bike from the only two rego combinations available...

Lane splitting can be dangerous, but at the end of the day it's not illegal. I have however noticed motorbikes lane splitting between straight ahead and turning lanes; that's illegal.

Motorbikes using the protected bicycle lanes? No, that's not allowed.

Every fortnight I start at a later time which sees me battle commuter traffic from Mosgiel to Dunedin.

Why do so many people just sit in the passing lane - they don't pass, they just sit there.
Over the last ~6 months, 4 "Keep Left" signs have been installed on SH1 between Mosgiel and Dunedin yet they still sit there

Drives me bananas every morning for a week, then I can go back to heading in at 6am for a week without having to battle the traffic

not just dunedin

people get on the motorways in auckland and immediately go to the middle (of 3) or the right hand lane when there is no other traffic there. they then get cars behind them and are completely oblivious to them.

It drives me crazy in Wellington too - people sit in the middle lane of the urban motorway, treating the left lane like a 5km long exit ramp for The Terrace. I was recently the passenger in a car where the driver accelerated hard, braked hard and was often over the speed limit, and then the passenger in another car with a driver who didn't speed but sat in the right lane of the motorway. I didn't fear for my safety with the former but I did with the latter - they seemed oblivous to what was going on around them.

I'm in Spain at the moment and you wouldn't dare sit in one of the autopista passing lanes if you weren't passing because you're continuously being overtaken by others doing 20km/h or more over the speed limit!

Well the lane splitting you see everyone doing is 99.99% illegal, if you read the road code and interpret it in a certain way there is a way to lane split legally, but it's hard to do .. mostly you are not allowed to undertake ... to keep it legal you have to overtake the car in the left lane but not leave that lane (the hard to do bit without scaring the poo out of drivers and/or building a collection of wing mirrors).

I asked a police patrol man once, he said so long as the person wasn't being a moron they just let people get on with it, not worth the hassle of screwing up traffic to get the riders and if they are doing it as safe as they can then no point holding them up.

The wife and I came across this muppet today on our way back from Hawkes Bay.

The video's a little long at 2:20mins but if you wait it out you'll get to see.

1) The truck driver pulling back in front of my wife forcing us to brake and veer left towards the ditch to miss him.

2) The truck driver attempting another overtake which had to be aborted half way (was trying to overtake two cars) due to running out of room.

3) The truck driver slowing down to give the driver the of the camper van a serve for holding everyone up.

So anyway, I sent a link to this youtube video to the health and safety manager of the transport company. I immediately got an email back from the General Manager. Our friend in this video has an appointment with the GM and the company driver standards instructor when he returns from his current job. I honestly hope they take this seriously as this muppet put multiple other road users in danger and doesn't deserve to be driving for a living.

This is almost at the exact same location where I posted my video of the guy that nearly did a head-on with a truck.

This road is pretty bad, passing should almost be banned along the entire section.... simply because a large number of people cannot pass safely.

Just an update on the video above. You'll see it has now been removed from YouTube.

The GM from the transport company contacted me to confirm that their investigation had been completed and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken with the driver involved. I won't go into detail what action has been taken as that's not for public dissemination. What I will say is that I've been very impressed with how the issue has been dealt with. The GM has been nothing but professional through the whole process so I have agreed to remove the footage from YouTube.
