New vehicle registration data from August, shows solid momentum in the space, with the sector once again recording more than 11,000 registrations.

Electric vehicle sales continue to wane locally, with MIA chief executive Aimee Wiley saying that the downward trend is “alarming” in respect to New Zealand’s CO2 emissions targets.

A total of 11,739 new vehicles were registered in August. When it came to electric vehicles, just 533 were registered. This represents a 7.1% drop year-on-year.

There was hope that the arrival of the Tesla Model Y would breathe new life into the pure plug-in segment, having landed a strong 403 registrations in June. But the EV’s registration tally has faded in each following month, dropping to 103 in July and 68 in August. It was the best-selling EV of the month, leading the Kia EV3 (25 registrations) and Toyota bZ4X (23).

We had a massive massive June for EV sales (BYD's $5k of their entire range promo + fieldays promotions, stacked with the Model Y face-lift launch). In Aug, we just returned to roughly to the sales volumes of April and May. Nothing to be alarmed about.

That said, we have largely squandered our country's lead in EV uptake, with countries that traditionally lagged us like Australia now passing us. Not great from an environmental perspective, or balance of trade perspective.

https://evdb.nz/ev-stats

That said, (non plug in) Hybrids are now the most popular drive train option. While a little disappointing for EV enthusiasts, is in general a massive win for the environment.

This change were hybrids are booming and plug in cars languishing relatively, is pritty much exactly what the government was told would happen in the RUC reintroduction, if they kept the EV RUC rate at more than double what a smaller Toyota hybrid pays in fuel tax.

BEV sales last month are interesting. 2 & 3 are commercial vans (Both of which are heavily discounted).

This is a little bit of a tricky spot for EV sales.

Last year was defined by crazy discounts, as brands dropped their pants to move stock of vehicles they committed to during the 2022 / 2023 boom (Brand new mach-e for $45k, Fiat 500e for $35k, GWM ora for $27k).

Most of the 2023 era excess stock is now gone.

And in general, Brands are looking return to more normal price levels, which means accepting a heap less sale's.

Many models have been Dropped from the NZ market (like the GWM Ora, Ioniq 6)
Many brands are sitting and watching the market before committing to bring post facelift stock (i.e. Kia with the EV6, Ford with the Mach-e.

And for some models (like the Ioniq 5), Pricing is back up ($80k for the standard range), but I imagine they are only planning to sell low volumes.

There are also some interesting new models in the pipeline for NZ, like the Zeeker 7X which people may be holding out for.

Interesting to see the continuing dominance of Tesla in the stats. The BYD Sealion 7, similar price to the Tesla Y, only sold one car to Tesla’s four - yet, to my eyes, is way more car for the money: newer design, higher equipment spec.

I think we are on the cusp of reluctance of many to buy Chinese giving way. A friend just traded her late model Kia for a Sealion 6 and she jokes that when she gets home she keeps driving around the block because she loves the Sealion so much.

It's good to see light commercial vehicles appearing in the charts

The light commerical run outs have been incredibly good value. It would not surprise me if many of the buyers are non-commercial van buyers at those recent prices.

BYD has a habit of suing over bad reviews. I wonder what's going to happen to this guy?

In China BYD won a libel case against some influencers. I don't know the details. Likewise Tesla does this too in China. Corporations are relatively new in recent China history.

In theory that kind of case is possible elsewhere. In practice there is usually a high bar requiring exceptional malicious Intent and a clear demonstration of the actual damages claimed

I would not expect any legal action on that guy. Tesla has tried it a few times in USA and UK. Most famously against the car show Top Gear in UK. Musk lost in all cases of that nature (outside China) as far as I'm aware.

The Top Gear case is interesting. They were allowed to lie about what actually happened with the Tesla Roadster. On the show they claimed they had to push the car because it ran out of battery, when in fact they staged the whole thing.

They got away with it more or less because they were deemed an entertainment show and not news.

Above charts is BEV only, and is over a longer time base.

If we add the 500+ Shark 6 PHEV's that BYD has sold, BYD is the top plug in vehicle seller (but a heap of it's sales came in June with it's fieldays marketing at $5k discount).

Should note that BYD has 6 plug in vehicles in it's lineup, vs the two that Tesla NZ has.

Likewise I am expected the sealion 7 to be selling better than it has been (especially when it had a $5k discount in in June). Both spec sheet and car itself seem impressive.

On the Model Y, the facelift version (which has been well reviewed), arrived in June. Given the popularity of the model Y over the last few years, I assume that there are people that like their ~2023 model Y so much, that they ordered the face lift without any cross shopping.

Now that the Zeekr 7x has been announced, there is the potential that buyers in this segment who are holding off for it's NZ pricing before committing to buying a new EV.

Indeed.

As you mention this is likely due to the big discounts in this sector:
- Edeliver 3: $25k +ORC new
- Edeliver 9: $40k +ORC for the 51.5 kWh "Bigger" version, or $49.990 + ORC for the 88 kWh "Bigger". Both New

https://aucklandautos.co.nz/current-promotions/edeliver-9-ev-van-promo

- Ex demo eTransit for $60k (List price $95k).

Most of the crazy deals of 2024 for passenger vehicles have now sold out ($45k mach-e, $27k GWM ora), These days, I don't think you can get a passenger EV for less than a $37k Fiat 500e.

For the right use case, the edeliver 3 could be a great private car. For example: the commuter who loves to take their expensive mountain bike to the local (but too far to bike) bike park after work. Bike can be locked up out of site in the back of the van all day, and the van is cheaper than an economy hatchback.

A Dodge Charger EV Driver Got a Ticket for a Loud Exhaust: TheDrive.Com

The Dodge Charger EV does not have an exhaust; it is an electric car. It may sometimes make noises like it does, but it doesn’t, and that can make it awkward when a police officer pulls you over for allegedly creating a public nuisance with a “super loud” muffler—just as one state trooper did to a Charger EV owner named Mike earlier this summer in Minnesota.

Some YouTubers did a noise test on the Charger EV, and they found the Fratzonic sound generator went up to 130 dB - that's in rock concert and airliner jet engine territory.

So anyone got FSD (Supervised) for their Tesla in NZ yet?

Very jealous!

We hired a Tesla with FSD in Canada on a recent holiday and it was amazing! 😎

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I would trust FSD around Canadian Drivers a boat load more than around NZ Drivers, some of the Rando stuff that goes on here is pretty sketchy

I think it would be a good idea overseas on right hand side of the road, especially if you are not used to that.

Main concern here in NZ is how would it know when to smoke the Subarus at the lights?

Looking at a used EV for general second car usage - family doesn't like the look of the leaf so  we're looking at alternatives - budget will stretch to  2020 egolf, MG5 etc.  We're seeing a bunch of imported EVs from Japan and wondered if they could be easily switched to NZ without hacking or changes to the car apart from in the settings.  I had  BMW 550i that was imported and it required a 'hack' to make it all work in english and would rather not go through that again.
