BEV wheels seem to be part of the low wind resistance design. Helps with overall efficiency.

yep its all about rolling resistance and drag reduction - larger wheels that allow more airflow in to the wheel space increases drag and impacts battery life... my egolf has 16" wheels with less open areas to reduce airflow... not that I intend to put larger wheels on it but it would be interesting to see how much difference it would make.

Overall imo it's another smart play from Toyota. One foot in. One less barrel of diesel for the right users.

All it needs to clear now is the cultural resistance. There'll always be a hard core of petrosexuals who think EVs & renewable energy turn people gay.

I'm torn as to whether they're going to rebalance the emissions issue by offsetting cheaper fuel (with FET tax removed) with added carbon taxation, or continue with their ignorance of climate change implications and pursue votes in the way you suggest. It may be a forlorn  hope to think they will grow an environmental conscience by then I'm afraid.

Haha. Read the following and weep.

That's why I said forlorn hope. This sums up the environmental vandalism that the coalition have conducted so far. It makes for depressing reading.

The 250km max range will be the main barrier. For other people it will be the perfect vehicle for their use. Ie; Just another Toyota.

Good article. Besides all the dumb stuff the NZ government is doing I learned the Australian government is giving Australians three free hours of power in the middle of the day:

Smart move. Lucky Aussies, Unlucky NZ.

"Petrosexual" is the most charitable term I can think of. And it's not hyperbole when such types happen to be deciding climate/energy/transport policy or lack thereof right now, here & abroad.

Australia has a whole different set of factors in play in their grid. Explained well in this vid.

What gets me with this, is why do we need evs to drive this design? It should be standard to increase efficiency across the board. We seem to make a big song and dance about the fuel cars use but if we can make the ICE versions more fuel efficient with the same design tweaks used to extract more range from a battery we absolutely should. It would make the ICE version cheaper to run and help contribute to emissions targets, not as much as changing fuel source but every little helps. It's that mentality that probably needs to shift, just because an ICE vehicle can drive distance and refill in minutes doesn't mean they should just be wasteful with consuming the fuel.

Sticker price tends to be higher on EV and most brands are generous with extras for EV. There may be a number of reasons for more options as standard. Buyers are usually paying a premium and the market expects a little more for it. Imo some brands use EV to pilot new features. It would not be surprising if those turned up as an option for other vehicles or standard.

But yes, if fuel efficiency was the ultimate goal then all utes for road use would look more like a Prius unless the primary use was actually agricultural. Good idea.

I can see that being really popular ; )
